FUNCTION OF SEARCH ENGINES

Imagine the internet as a giant library with

millions of books, but without any way to find
what you need. That’s where search engines
comes in. They’re like librarians who help you
find the right book (or website) in this large
library.

WOODGROVE 17
BANK
• Crawling: search engines use special programs called
“crawler” to visit websites and read the content. Think of them
as robots exploring the internet.
• Indexing: the crawlers store all the information they gather in
a giant database called an “index”. This is like creating a
catalogue of all the books in the library.
• Searching: When you type your question into a search engine,
it looks for matching words in its index. It’s like looking up a
word in the library catalogue.
• Ranking: The search engine then sorts the results based on
how relevant they are to your search. It’s like the librarian
recommending the best books for the topic.
• Showing results: finally, the search engine shows you a list of
matching websites, helping you find the information you are
looking for. WOODGROVE 18
