Introduction
What is Population Growth?
In simple words, Population Growth refers to the
difference between Birth rate and death rate at a
point of time in a particular area.
Definition :-
“The concept of population
growth refers to the change in the number
of inhabitants of a territory during a
specific period irrespective of the fact that
the change is positive or negative.”
~Accrding to R.C. Chandana
Historical Population Growth

Early Human or Prehistoric Population :
-

Estimates suggest that the effective population size

of early Homo sapiens was around 10,000 to 30,000
individuals. The actual census population was
roughly 100,000 to 300,000 individuals.

Population Growth: -
The population remained relatively
stable until the advent of agriculture, with
estimates ranging from 1 to 10 million individuals
during the early Holocene (around 10,000 BCE or
around 11,950 years ago from today.)

Agricultural Revolution :
Timeline: The Agricultural Revolution began around 10,000 BCE and
continued through the 18th century.
Impact on Population: The increase in agricultural production and
technological advancements led to unprecedented population growth. In
Britain, agricultural output grew 2.7-fold between 1700 and 1870. The
world population reached the milestone of 1 billion in 1804 due to
advancement in the agricultural sector.

Industrial Revolution:-
• Timeline: The Industrial Revolution began in the
late 18th century and continued through the 19th
century.
• Impact on Population: The Industrial Revolution
led to massive urbanization and population
growth. In England, the population more than
doubled from 1750 to 1850, growing from around 6
million to over 16 million. Improvements in health,
increased birth rates, and migration from rural
areas to cities all contributed to population
growth. The world population reached the
milestone of 2 billion by 1927. It took around 126
years for the population to double from 1 billion
to 2 billion. The growth rate was about (.7%).
