Objectives:
• Identify types of tournaments used in a sports

• Compute for the single and double elimination types
of tournaments
• Prepare diagrams for the single and double

Single Elimination

This type of elimination determines the

winner by eliminating the loser in every
match until there is one team left. This is
the easiest and fastest way to declare a
winner.
This type of elimination is best used in
games with body or physical contact like
boxing and taekwondo. This so called the
“knock –out” system.
Formula:

G=N–1
where G – number of Games
N – number of Teams

o c byes and distribute them

evenly in the upper and
P r lower brackets.

Pairing of teams should

be done through the
drawing of slots.
After knowing the number of games
to be played, the next step is to
determine the number of teams to
play in the first round of the
tournaments. To avoid uneven
number of the teams, in the second
round of the tournament, the
number of BYES in the in the first
round must be determine first. A bye
entitles a team to advance to the
next round without playing.
How to determine the byes

The number of teams is

subtracted from the
power of two (2,4,8,16,32
etc.) which is immediately
higher than the number of
teams as shown in the
formula.
Procedure
1. Compute the number of games using the formula
for the elimination tournament
2. Determine the number of byes using the formula
for single elimination for byes and distribute them
evenly in the upper and lower brackets.
3. Make sure that the winners from precious
tournaments will not meet in the first round of the
tournament.
Procedure in getting the byes

•Determine the seeded teams by looking

the into the results of the previous game.
•Compute the number of games using the
formula for double elimination
tournament.
Bye = P 2 - N
Formul
a: where P - least power of 2
higher than N
N - number of entries
Double Elimination

In this type of
elimination, a team
should be defeated
G = 2(N – 1)
twice before it is • where G – number of
declared out of the Games
• N – number of Teams
competition. It is
• 1 – (Constant) given
the fairest type of
tournament
Procedure
1. Determine the seeded teams by looking the into the results of the
previous game
2. Compute the number of games using the formula for the double
elimination tournament
3. Determine the number of byes using the formula for single
elimination for byes and distribute them evenly in the upper and
lower brackets.
Round Robin
What is Round Robin?

The term round robin is derived from the French term ruban, meaning
“ribbon,” after some time was changed to Robin.
Round Robin is a common type of tournament schedule among team
sports such as basketball, volleyball, and baseball.
The round robin is a very fair method of determining the winner
because all opponents can get to play against each other.
Procedure

1. Compute the number of games using the formula of

Round Robin
2. With each number representing a team, arrange the teams
evenly in two vertical columns. Pair the teams that are
adjacent in each column. Thus, in the first round for 6
teams, you will have Team 1 vs Team 6, Team 2 vs Team
5, and Team 3 vs Team 4.
3. Rotate the numbers counterclockwise in the two columns
for the next round
4. All number ones are constant.

Ladder

The Ladder tournament is

most commonly used in
minor sports or games.
This type of elimination
tournament is best used in
individual sports. e.g.,
boxing, fencing and
taekwondo
