Types of Elimination
Single Elimination

● It is a type of elimination tournament where the loser of each math-up is immediately
eliminated from the tournament.

Advantages

● It is the most direct way to produce the “Best Player”.

● It is simplest, least complicated and fastest method.
● It is attractive when time and ease of operation essential.

Disadvantages

● The player can fail only once and then they are out of the competition.
● No second chance.

Formula

● G = game
● N = number of entries
● G = N-1

Example

● There are 4 competitors in Badminton Tournament.

● G = N-1

= 4-1
=3
BYE

● In tournament, it is preferential of a player or team not paired with a competitor in an

early round and thus automatically to play in the next round.
● It happens when the number of entries/teams does not belong in the number multiple
of 2 or odd number.

Double Elimination

● The name implies, requires the players to lose twice to be eliminated from the
competition.
● Advantage:
● It gives the athlete the opportunity to compete and makes the consequences of
a single round match less costly than single elimination.
Formula
G = 2 (N-1)

Example: There are 4 competing athletes in Discuss Throw. How many games are there if
double elimination system will be used for the tournament?

G = 2 (N-1)
= 2 (4-1)
= 2 (3)
=6

Exercise:
● Using Single elimination and Double Elimination systems, compute the number of
games for 6 teams competing in a Table Tennis Tournament. Show the diagram for
the computed games.

Round Robin Elimination

● It is a type of tournament in which each participant/team plays every other

participant/team participating in the same amount of time.

Advantage/s

● It allows a guaranteed number of games.

● Luck does not play as big factor as an elimination tournament.

Disadvantage/s

● It is not as exciting for the most part.

● The matches in the later half of the tournament could have no impact on the final
outcome of the tournament.
● Teams may not give as much effort for the championship where two teams will finish
the same record.

Round Robin Tie Breaker Rules

● 2 - team tie
● Use the point differential between the 2 matches. The team that won by the
most points would be declared as winner.
● 3 or more team tie
● Check the record of each team against the other teams that have tied. If one
team has a better record. They would declared as winner.
● Tally up the point differential in each match against the other tied teams. The
team that that has the largest points differential should be declared as winner.
● Use total points scored against the other tied games.

Tracking Records

● The team with the best record after all the games have been complicated is the winner.

Formula

● G = N (N-1)/2 Round = N-1

● Suppose there are 4 competing teams in Beach Volleyball tournament. Compute the
number of games
● G = N (N-1)/2 Round Robin

= 4 (4-1)/2 Round=N-1
= 4(3)/2
= 12/2
