Project on

Construction of an Eco-Friendly Building

using Green Building approach
Presented by

Introduction about green building

 Green building (also known as green construction or sustainable building) expands and complements
the building design concerns of economy, utility, durability, and comfort.
 A Green Building is one which uses less water, optimizes energy efficiency, conserves natural
resources, generates less waste and provides healthier space for occupants as compared to conventional
buildings.
Main features of eco-friendly housing:
Objectives of green building:

 Green Buildings are designed to reduce the overall impact on human health and the
natural environment by the following ways:
 Using energy, water and other resources efficiently.
 By reducing waste, pollution, and environmental degradation.
 Conserving the natural environment.
 Economic sustainability.
Fundamental principles:

 Structure design efficiency

 Energy efficiency
 Water efficiency
 Materials efficiency
 Waste and toxic reduction
• STRUCTURE EFFICIENCY:
It is the concept of sustainable building and has largest impact on cost and performance.
It aims to minimize the enviornmment impact associated with all life-cycles.

• ENERGY EFFICIENCY:
The layout of the construction can be strategized so that natural light pours for additional warmth.
Shading the roof with trees offers an eco-friendly alternative to air conditioning.

• WATER EFFICIENCY:
To minimize water consumption one should aim to use the water which has been collected, used, purified
and reused.

• MATERIAL EFFICIENCY:
Materials should be use that can be recycled and can generate surplus amount of energy. An example of
this are solar power panels, not only they provide lightening but they are also a useful energy source.

• WASTE AND REDUCTION:

It is probable to reuse resources. What may be waste to us may have another benefit to something else.
Literature review:

Karji et al., (2020), in the United States of America, investigated the barriers to sustainability
promotion in the construction industry.

A study by Adabre et al., (2020) on the critical barriers to sustainability attainment in

affordable housing revealed that related barriers
 Alam et al., (2019) submitted that a delay in planning processes and approvals by the government are
the major barriers to attaining housing sustainability in Australia.
 Bond (2011) in Chan et al., (2018) also stated that inadequate information on sustainable principles is a
major barrier to sustainability attainment in New Zealand and Australia.
 Abraham and Gundimeda (2018) quantitatively identify, rank and prioritize the barriers to the
adoption of green building using the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) in India.
 Agyemang and Morrison (2018) in Dublin claim that the lack of enforcement of the planning control
system on development, ineffective sustainable housing guidelines, and a contradictory policy between
local and central authorities are the barriers to sustainable, affordable housing.
 . Czischke and van Bortel (2018) noted that inadequate policies and sustainability practice guidelines
are the major barriers to sustainable housing promotion.

CONCLUSION
Important features of green building:

The present study was executed with the following strategies as enumerated below showing their positive
outcomes and
observations:-

Phase I: Eco-friendly Wall Systems a Sustainable Design

Phase II: Inclined Green Roofs
Phase III: Water Harvesting System
ConsTruction eco-friendly building with green building aspects:

 FOUNDATION: It is recommended to adopt a foundation depth of 0.6 m

for normal soil like gravely soil, red soils etc., To avoid crack formation In
foundation the masonry shall be thoroughly packed with cement mortar of
1:8 boulders and bond stones at regular intervals. In case of black cotton
and other soft soils it is recommend to use under ream pile foundation
which saves about (20% to 25%) cost over the conventional method of construction.
PLINTH:A plinth of height 0.2 m above ground level was adopted,
constructed with 1:6 cement mortar. The plinth slab of (100-150) mm.

impervious blanket like concrete slabs or stone slabs was provided all
round the building to reduce erosion of soil and thereby avoiding exposure offoundation surface and crack
formation
.

RAT- TRAP BOND WALLING

WITH INSULATED CAVITY ROOFING AND GARDENING:
WALL:
 The rat-trap bond is laid by placing the bricks on  Normally 12.5 cm thick RCC slabs are used
their sides have a cavity of (80-100) mm, with for roofing of residential buildings the roof

Strength is equal to the standard 230 mm. brick wall,
can be defined as a roof of the building,
but consumes 25% less bricks
 The overall saving on cost of materials used for which is partially or completely covered with
construction compared to the traditional 230 wall is vegetation and a growing medium, planted

building and 100 mm for inside walls.
The cavity of the wall was filled by the wooden
powder and other insulating material.
DIFFERENT FROM OTHER BUILDINGS:

• The design, maintaince and construction of buildings have tremendous effect on our

enviornment and natural resources.
• Green Building is different from the other buildings because it use a minimum amount of
nonrenewable energy, produce minimal pollution, increases the comfort, health and safety
of the people who work in them.
• It also minimize the waste in construction by recovering materials and reusing or
recycling them.
INCREASING GREEN BUILDINGS IN INDIA
 Today more than 5,975 green buildings (as on FEB 2022) are being constructed all over India, of
which 2,383 green buildings are certified and fully functional.

BENEFITS OF GREEN BUILDING

• Buildings have a large effect on the enviornment, human health and the economy. • The successful
adoption of GREEN BUILDING development can maximize both the economic and enviornmental
performance of the buildings.

ENVIORNMENTAL BENEFITS
• Protect biodiversity and ecosystems Improve air and water quality Reduce waste streams Conserve
natural resources . we can also improve ground water levels.
Economic benefits:
• Reduce operating costs • Create, expand, and shape markets for green product and services • Improve
occupant productivity.
SOCIAL BENEFITS
• Enhance occupant comfort and health. Heighten aesthetic qualities. Minimize strain on local
infrastructure. Improve overall quality of life.
Environment Social Economics
AFFECT ON NATURAL RESOURCES
• According to surveys conducted in 2022, of total land area iequivalent to 7.55 billion sq ft,s developed,
which represents an increase of 24 percent land covering green buildings over the past 3 years. • In terms
of energy, buildings accounted for 39.4 percent of total energy consumption and 67.9 percent of total
electricity consumption.
Observation and analysis:

observation were taken on the traditional and green building:-

Normal Temperature Outside = 32.00C
Room Temperature of Traditional Building = 31.40C
Room Temperature of Green Building = 29.30C
Reduction in Temperature for Traditional Building = 0.60C
For Green Building = 2.70C
Difference between Reductions in Temperature ofTraditional and Green Building = 2.10C
After the increase in temperature by the lighting effectTemperature outside around Traditional and Green Building= 37.00C
Room Temperature of Traditional Building = 34.90C
Room Temperature of Green Building = 30.10C
Reduction in temperatureFor Traditional Building = 2.10C
For Green Building = 6.90C
Difference between Reductions in temperature ofTraditional and Green Building = 4.80C
Conclusion:

 This research identified the exciting developments taking place on the technology front
and analyzes their implications for intelligent and green buildings, highlighting
examples of “best in class” buildings employing green and intelligent technologies.
These buildings are dynamic environments that respond to their occupants‟ changing
needs and lifestyles. This research provided documented evidence to educate and
influence end-users, building owners, architects, and contractors that a “greener
building” can be achieved using intelligent technology and that this “greening” will
provide a tangible and significant return on investment.
