Factors Influencing Why Are Biomes Different1

Biomes differ due to several factors including latitude, altitude, and ocean currents. Proximity to the equator results in higher solar energy and rainfall, while higher altitudes lead to lower temperatures. Additionally, the interaction of cold air currents with warm land can create arid conditions, influencing biome distribution.

Factors that

determine
why biomes
are different.
What factors determine where biomes are located in the world ?/Why are Biomes different

• Latitude
• The closer to the equator leads to a higher amount of solar
energy which means more energy (from the sun) for plants
to grow through higher levels of rainfall.

• Biomes in high latitudes (further from the equator) have

lower temperatures and less exposure to the sun and
precipitation affecting the quality of the soil.
• Altitude and landforms: temperatures fall by 0.65 degrees
for every 100 metres increase in elevation eg. The temperature
on the base of Mt Kilimanjaro in Kenya in the mid 20s. At its
peak of 5895 metres the temperate drops to -26 degrees.

• Ocean currents and air movement:

• When cold air currents flow close to warm land
masses deserts form. This is due to the less evaporation
making the air drier eg. The coast of Western Australia
makes Perth experience less rainfall than Sydney.
