Lesson
Developing a Paragraph
that Illustrates Text Types

A good paragraph is composed of a topic sentence (or key sentence),

relevant supporting sentences, and a closing (or transition) sentence. This
structure is a key to keeping your paragraph focused on the main idea and
creating a clear and concise image.
Effective paragraphs have four main characteristics: a topic sentence,
unity, coherence, and adequate development.
Aside from the characteristics of a good paragraph, how can you
develop a paragraph that illustrates each text type?
Read and do the activities that follow to find the answers.

6
What’s In

Directions: Rearrange the following steps on how to synthesize information

from various sources. Use numbers 1 to 4.

A. Write paragraphs with topic sentence

B . Outline your structure
C . Organize your sources
D. Revise and edit

Let’s check your answers!

What’s New

Directions: Read the following paragraph carefully and answer the

questions about it.

Energy produced from coal power plants is cheaper and more affordable

than other energy sources. Since coal is abundant, it is definitely cheap to

produce power using this fuel. Moreover, it is not expensive to extract and

mine from coal deposits.

O n the contrary, a coal power plant causes air pollution, and linked

with other human illness like asthma, cancer, heart and lung ailments,

neurological problems, acid rain, global warming and other severe

environmental and public health impacts.

6.

What Is It

Kinds of Paragraph

Narrative paragraph helps tells a story. It should express the

chronology and gives enough information that the reader can understand not

only the order of the event but the entire event itself.

Explanatory paragraph explains information. It may compare,

contrast, list, summarize, or discuss different types of information.

When writing a descriptively, engage as many of the five senses as

possible. Using vivid and vibrant vocabulary, a descriptive paragraph should

paint a mental picture of the person, object, or situation, including the

emotions involved.

8
Persuasive paragraph is intended to gain the readers support

concerning a specific topic. They support your argument and draw the reader

to your conclusion.

Factual Recount is used to record details and facts of a particular

event which the speaker or writer has not necessarily been involved in. A

personal recount describes an event in which the speaker/ writer has

personally been involved.

What’s More

Directions: Read the following paragraphs carefully and identify what kind of

paragraph each is.

The Philippines is just like any other country when it comes to safety.

Some areas are considered more dangerous compared to others. But

comparatively to the rest of the country, Palawan is considered a one of the

safest and most tourist-friendly place in the Philippines .

1.

9
How does the COVID 19 virus spread? The virus is transmitted
through direct contact with respiratory droplets of an infected person
(generated through coughing and sneezing), and touching surfaces
contaminated with the virus. C OV I D 19 virus may survive on surfaces for
several hours, but simple disinfectants can kill it.

2.

Last year was the first time I had ever been the new kid at school. For
the first four days, I was completely alone. I don’t think I even spoke to a
single person. Finally, at lunch on the fifth day, Karen Watson walked past
her usual table and sat down right next to me. Even I was new, I had already
figured out who Karen Watson was. S he was popular. Pretty soon, all of
Karen’s friend were sitting there right next to me. I never became great friends
with Karen, but after lunch that day, it seemed like all sorts of people were
happy to be my friend. You cannot convince me that Karen did not know what
she was doing. I have a great respect for her, and I learned a great deal about
what it means to be a true leader.

3.

The school fair is right around the corner, and tickets have just gone
on sale. Even though you may be busy, you will still want to reserve just one
day out of an entire year to relax and have fun with u s . Even if you don’t have
much money, you don’t have to worry. A school fair is a community event,
and therefore prices are kept low. Perhaps, you are still not convinced. Maybe
you feel you are too old for fairs, or you just don’t like them. Well, that’s what
my grandfather thought, but he came to last year’s school fair and had this
to say about it:” I had the best time of my life!” While it’s true that you may
be able to think of a reason not to come, I’m also sure that you can think of
several reasons why you must come. We look forward to seeing you at the
school fair!

10
What I Have Learned

In developing a paragraph, consider its kind like descriptive from

the word describe, it naturally describes something or someone in conveying

information. Expository, this paragraph explain how something works. It

demands a certain knowledge. Narrative reminds a story within the story,

such as writing a story or an essay. Persuasive tries to convince the reader

about a particular point of view. Factual recount is concerned with facts or

contains facts, rather than giving theories or interpretation. Personal recount

describes an event in which the speaker/writer has personally been involved.

A good paragraph is composed of a topic sentence, relevant supporting

sentences, and a closing sentence.

What I C a n Do

Directions: Refer to the given kinds of paragraph; then, construct a five -

sentence paragraph about each of the following illustrations.

11
1. Descriptive

2. Narrative

12
3. Persuasive

4. Explanatory

13
5. Factual and Personal Recount

What I C a n Do On My Own

Activity 1

Directions: Identify which paragraph is an example of descriptive, narrative,

explanatory, persuasive, or factual and personal recount.

National Book Development Board also known as the book Publishing

Industry Development Act, was a clear demonstration of the government’s

attention to the important role of books in nation building. The law created the

N B D B which is tasked primarily to formulate and implement a National Book

Policy with a corresponding National Book Development Plan geared towards

the development of the book publishing industry.

1.

14
Even as the country reopens gradually, we should remember that the

health threat remains. Covid-19 continues to threaten lives and wreak havoc on

economies around the world.

2.

The Philippines is in the same situation. To help in the collective effort to

mitigate the impact of the pandemic, the N B D B took action at the onset. NBDB

(National Book Development Board) contributed P62.86 million that were pooled

with the funds used for social programs and other measures to fight the

pandemic. The figure includes P30.93 million that were to be for projects and

activities that were cancelled or cannot be held because of the lingering global

health crisis.

3.

Right now, the N B D B is working to assess the damage borne by the

Philippine publishing sector so far. The results of that research should be useful

to the N B D B board. It will convene soon, hopefully before the end of May, so that

it can map out its mandate under the “new normal”.

4.

With the Covid-19 threat still present, that new normal calls for social

distancing. This agency will endeavor to follow certain precautions, which is why

the board has approved via ad referendum to extend the validity of the NBDB

certificates of registration. The extension will be for two months after the

government operations resume to normal. Executive Director, Mr. Jerry Tizon,

and others in N B D B are looking at making other procedural and system changes

15
in order to practice of social distancing, not only to protect those working in the

agency but also our stakeholders requiring something from the office.

5.

In the meantime, we encourage people to avoid leaving home. The pandemic

may have restricted our movements, but there is a bright side to avoiding public

places. We can spend more time with family and loved ones, something difficult

given hustle and bustle of lives under the “old normal”.

6.

Also, People have more time to read now. Granted, modern life offers many

ways of keeping people entertained and preoccupied. We could indulge in all that,

but we should carve out time for reading in our daily routine. That is why the

N B D B has written to the Palace, to include books as an essential item during

this continuing crisis.

7.

There is perhaps no better balm for these difficult times than reading. Even

while movements are restricted or risky, nothing can fetter the mind. As poet

Emily Dickenson wrote:

“There is no frigate like a book

To take us lands away,

Nor any coursers like a page

of prancing poetry

This traverse may the

poorest take

without oppress of toil;

16
How frugal is the chariot

That bears the h u m a n soul!”

8.

This is one my favorite literary works. Perhaps you can share what you like,

including poems about reading written in Filipino, Cebuano, or in other

Philippines languages. It may be fun to pick some of the submissions and post

them in this space.

9.

Going back to N B D B matters, we shall keep you posted when there are

developments. For now, stay safe everyone.

10.

Activity 2.

Directions: Identify the following details. Write N if narrative, P if persuasive, E

if explanatory, D if descriptive, FPR if factual and personal recount.

1. A paragraph that describe something or somebody, that is

conveying the information.

2. These are used to record details and facts of a particular event.

3. It tells a story or an event.

4.The purpose of this paragraph is to help readers feel and

sense the details that the writer wants to convey.

5. Explain a subject, give directions or show how

something happens.

17
What I Can Do More

Due to C OVID - 19 pandemic, we experience different problems like food

shortage, lack of source of income, health risk, and also education. In a short
paragraph, share to u s what problems you have encountered during this
pandemic and how you have overcome these problems.

To rate your paragraph, refer to the following
