FARM BUILDINGS &

SHELTERS
H.N.Abraham
1
Farm buildings
A farm building is any of the structures
used in farming operations, such as
buildings to house families and workers, as
well as livestock, machinery, and crops.

They may include:

 Barns
 Green houses & polyhouses
 Sheds & garages
 Poultry houses
 Dairy & milking parlors
 Pigsties & cattle sheds
 Farm labor housing

2
BARNS

A barn is an agricultural building usually

on farms and used for various purposes.
It is usually a large building for the
storage of farm products or feed as well
as for the housing of farm animals and
equipment.

Greenhouses
& polyhouses
1. Greenhouses & polyhouses

◦ A greenhouse comprises glass or plastic walls and a roof that

traps sun heat. This creates a warm and humid environment
that is ideal for growing plants. The walls and roof of a
greenhouse allow sunlight to enter, but they also prevent heat
from escaping, which helps to maintain a stable temperature
inside the structure.
◦ Greenhouses typically grow plants that require a warm and
humid environment, such as tropical plants, fruits, and
vegetables. They also extend the growing season for plants that
would otherwise not survive in colder climates. Greenhouses
come in various sizes, from small backyard structures to large
commercial facilities
◦ Polyhouses, on the other hand, are structures made of plastic
walls and a roof. They are like greenhouses in that they provide
a controlled environment for growing plants but are typically
less expensive and easier to construct. Polyhouses are often
used by small-scale farmers and gardeners who want to
extend their growing season or protect their plants from harsh
weather conditions.
◦ One of the advantages of polyhouses is that they are more
flexible than greenhouses. They can be easily moved or
dismantled, which makes them ideal for temporary or seasonal
use. They are also less expensive to construct than
greenhouses, which makes them a popular choice for small-
scale growers.
4
Sheds & Garages

A shed is typically a simple, single-storey

roofed structure, often used for storage or
as a workshop, and typically serving as
outbuilding, such as in a back garden or
on an allotment. Sheds vary considerably in
their size and complexity of construction.

5
Poultry houses
A poultry house is a building where domesticated birds, or poultry, are kept. Poultry houses
protect birds from predators and the elements and provide a safe place for them to lay eggs and
roost.

6
Dairy & milking parlor
A dairy milking Parlor is a facility where cows are milked on a dairy farm. The Parlor is a key part
of the dairy farm, as it's where milk is collected.
Types of milking Parlors:
1. Parallel Parlors

 Also known as side-by-side Parlors, cows stand in parallel lines facing away from a central
aisle

 The rear of the cows is open for milking

 The cows are released from the Parlor at once after milking

 This type of Parlor takes up the least space per cow

2. Herringbone Parlors

 Cows are positioned at an angle to the operator,

forming a “V” shape

 The design makes it easier for the milker to access

the udder

 The positioning gates give each cow its own space,

which can make the cows more comfortable

 This type of Parlor is practical, flexible, and labour-

effective

3. Rotary Parlors

 A platform moves, and the cows stand on it

 This type of Parlor can be a viable alternative for large

dairy farms

8
Pigsties & cattle
sheds
Pigsty

 A small, outdoor enclosure for raising pigs

 Also known as a hog pen, pig Parlor, or pig-cote
 Usually, a fenced area of dirt or mud
 Can be made from locally available materials
 Should be comfortable for pigs, with good
ventilation and shade
 Should be divided into pens for different phases
of production

9
Cattle shed

 A barn or shelter for cattle

 Some cattle sheds are stall barns with milk
rooms
 Some cattle sheds are cross-ventilated barns
with fans that pull air through a water pad
 Some cattle sheds are loose housing with a
milking Parlor
 Some cattle sheds are open-front sheds for
beef-breeding cows during calving

10
Farm labor housing
Farm labour housing is affordable housing for farmworkers, including domestic, migrant,
and seasonal workers.
