BEC 6 - Module 3.0 Columns

The document provides an overview of columns in architectural structures, focusing on their design considerations, types, and classifications. It explains the role of columns as vertical members that carry loads and categorizes them into braced and unbraced types. Additionally, it discusses reinforcement details and the effects of axial loads on columns.

BEC 6 – Architectural Structures

Module 3.0 Columns

Prepared by: Christian Paul L. Mendoza, RCE/RSE
Topic Learning Outcomes
By the end of this lecture, the student should be able to:
1. Demonstrate understanding on the design considerations and
detailing of columns.
Buildings
Buildings are complex assemblages of structural and non-structural elements.
What is a Column?
• Columns are vertical members that carries loads from
slabs and beams

• Columns are primarily compression members although

they may also have to resist bending.
Types of Columns
Categories of Columns

How to Categorize
Column?
Simply Supported:
Fixed base with roller support
Le = 0.699L
Le = L

Fixed base with Free End: Both Fixed End:

Le = 2L Le = 0.5L

Classification of Columns
BRACED COLUMNS
• The lateral loads are resisted by shear walls or other
form of bracing
Classification of Columns
UNBRACED COLUMNS
• The lateral loads are resisted by the sway action of the
column
Reinforcement Details

• Minimum spacing for reinforcement > hagg + 5mm
