Design of Concrete Columns Interaction Diagram

The document outlines the construction of an interaction diagram for concrete columns, detailing its purpose in defining failure and safe zones for various eccentricities. It describes key points in the diagram, calculations for axial compression and moment strengths, and provides a step-by-step design process using non-dimensional interaction diagrams. An example is included to illustrate the calculations for a specific concrete column design.

DESIGN OF

CONCRETE
COLUMNS:
CONSTRUCTION OF THE
INTERACTION DIAGRAM
INTRODUCTION
• The interaction diagram defines the failure zone of the
curve and the safe zone inside the curve in the
interaction diagram.
• Gives the capacities for the full range of eccentricities
from 0 to infinity.
• For any eccentricity, there is a pair of Pn and Mn in the
diagram.
• Can be used for either eccentric or axially loaded
column.
• The I.D. is useful for either designing the section or for
checking the section.

Calculation of Pn and Mn for a given strain
distribution
The seven major points of the diagram are as
follows:
Point 1: axial compression at zero
moment.
Point 2: maximum axial compression
load permitted by code at zero
eccentricity.
Point 3: maximum moment strength at
the maximum axial compression load
permitted by code.
Point 4: compression and moment
strength at zero strain in the tension
side reinforcement.
Pont 5: compression and moment
strength at 50% strain in the tension
side reinforcement.
Point 6: compression and moment
strength at balanced conditions.
Point 7: moment strength at zero axial
force.
Note: Any combination of P and M outside the envelope will cause failure.

A 400mm x 400mm concrete column
reinforced with 8 – 25 mm diameter bars,
placed symmetrically on two-sides. Use f’c =
30 MPa and fy = 414 Mpa. The distance of
the compression bars from the compression
side (d’) is assuemed to be equal to 70 mm.

DESIGN USING NON-DIMENSIONAL
INTERACTION DIAGRAMS
1. Calculate factored loads (Pu , Mu ) and e for relevant load combinations
2. Select potentially governing case(s)
3. Use estimate h to calculate gh, e/h for governing case(s)
4. Use appropriate chart (App. A) target rg
Pn Pu f c

Calculate g 

5. Select
6. If dimensions are significantly different from estimated (step 3),
recalculate ( e / h ) and redo steps 4 & 5.
Revise Ag if necessary.

7. Select steel  Ast   Ag

8. Using actual dimensions & bar sizes to check all load combinations
( use charts or “exact: interaction diagram).
9. Design lateral reinforcement.
