Adding and Subtracting Monomials

The document outlines classroom rules and provides a review of integer operations, including adding and subtracting integers with different and the same signs. It introduces monomials, defining them and explaining how to identify like and unlike terms, as well as how to add and subtract them. Additionally, it includes activities and reflection questions to reinforce learning about combining like terms and simplifying expressions.

Adding and

Monomials
How can you add
and subtract
monomials?
Learning Competency:
You will be able to add and subtract
simple monomials.

Enabling objectives:
At the end of the session, you are expected to:
a. State the rule of adding and subtracting integers;
b. Define monomial;
c. Identify like and unlike monomials;
d. Add and subtract monomials with the same variables
and exponents; and
e. Simplify expressions by combining like terms.
MONOMIAL:
It is an algebraic
expression with only one
term.
LIKE AND UNLIKE TERMS

We call MONOMIALS LIKE TERMS if:

they have the same variable(s), and the
same exponents .

Examples of like terms:

1. 4x and −2x (both have just x)
2. 5a2 and −3a2 (same variable and exponent)
LIKE AND UNLIKE TERMS

Examples of UNLIKE TERMS:

1. 3x and 3x2
(different exponents)
2. 2y2 and 2z2 (different variables)
ADDING AND SUBTRACTING
MONOMIALS

When you add or subtract like terms, you keep

the variable and exponent the same and just
add or subtract the coefficients.

Note: You cannot add or subtract unlike terms

(e.g., 2x+4y) directly because they are different.
ADDING AND SUBTRACTING
MONOMIALS

When you add or subtract like terms, you keep

the variable and exponent the same and just
add or subtract the coefficients.

Note: You cannot add or subtract unlike terms

(e.g., 2x+4y) directly because they are different.
ADDING AND SUBTRACTING
MONOMIALS

Example:

1. 3x + 5x
2. 2xy – 10xy
3. -4a2 + 9a2
4. -5xy - 10xy
2 2

5. 11abc + 11bcd
SIMPLIFYING EXPRESSIONS BY
COMBINING LIKE TERMS

To simplify, you look for like terms in an expression

and combine them by adding or subtracting.

Steps to simplify:
1. Identify like terms.
2. Group them together.
3. Add or subtract the coefficients.
4. Keep the variable and exponent the same.
SIMPLIFYING EXPRESSIONS BY
COMBINING LIKE TERMS

Examples:
Simplify the following expressions.

1. 3x + 2x – x + 5y – 3y.
2. 2a – 11a + b + 6b
2 2 2 2

3. 2m + 10n – 5m – 6n

TAKEAWAYS

1. What makes two monomials “like terms”?

2. Why is it important to identify like terms before
adding or subtracting?
3. What did you find easy or challenging about
combining like terms? Why?
4. How can you add and subtract simple monomials?
5. How can you simplify expressions?
Let’s Try to Reflect

1. "Today I learned that...”

2. "Now I understand how to...”

3. "One question I still have is..."
