Introduction
These Parameters Include:
Based on power:
• Indicated Power (IP)
IC (Internal Combustion) • Brake Power (BP)
engines convert chemical • Friction Power (FP)

energy into mechanical work. Efficiency parameters:

• Mechanical Efficiency (ηₘ)
• Thermal Efficiency (ηᵢ and ηb)

Performance Parameters help Fuel Economy Parameters:

• Specific Fuel Consumption (SFC)
evaluate the efficiency, power
and overall effectiveness of an Air Handling Parameter:
• Volumetric Efficiency (ηᵥ)
engine.

3
Indicated Power (IP)

• Power developed inside the engine cylinder.

• IP = Pm⋅ L ⋅ A ⋅ N ⋅ K/60
where:

Pm: mean effective pressure

L: stroke length

A: area of piston

N: engine speed in RPM

K: number of power strokes per minute

4
Brake Power (BP)

• Usable power available at the crankshaft.

• It is measured using a Dynamometer.

• BP = 2π ⋅ N ⋅ T/60

where:

T: Torque

N: RPM

5
Friction Power (FP)

• Power lost due to friction between engine components.

• Affects the mechanical efficiency of the engine.

• FP = IP−BP

6
Mechanical Efficiency (ηₘ)

• Indicates how much of the developed power is actually used.

• ηₘ = (BP/IP)×100%

• Lower values indicate higher friction losses.

• Range for modern IC engines: 75% to 90%

7
Thermal Efficiency

• Thermal efficiency shows how well fuel energy is converted into useful
work.

• Indicated Thermal Efficiency (ηᵢ):

ηᵢ= IP×60/Fuel Energy Input

• Brake Thermal Efficiency (ηb):

ηb = BP×60/Fuel Energy Input

8
Specific Fuel Consumption (SFC)

• SFC measures how much fuel is used to produce a unit of power.

• Brake SFC (BSFC):

BSFC = Fuel consumption per hour/BP

• Indicated SFC (ISFC):

ISFC = Fuel consumption per hour/IP

9
Volumetric Efficiency (ηᵥ)

• Ratio of actual volume of air intake to the theoretical volume.

• Volumetric efficiency shows how effectively the engine fills its

cylinders with air.

• ηᵥ = Volume of air drawn/Swept Volume

10
Conclusion

• Performance parameters provide insights into the engine’s operation.

• Help in improving design, fuel efficiency, and emissions.

• Essential for engine testing and benchmarking.
