Sportsmanship and Success

The document explores the relationship between sportsmanship levels and academic success in the religious culture and knowledge of ethics course among secondary school students. It identifies that increased hours of physical education positively influence sportsmanship, with findings indicating that students in regular schools exhibit better sportsmanship than those in religious schools. The study concludes that the values taught in the RCKEC course enhance students' sportsmanship, suggesting a need for further research on sportsmanship in various educational contexts.

Conclusion
• Importance: Relating sportsmanship level to the course that
students take in secondary school.
• Purpose: Identifying the relationship between sportsmanship level
of
Abstract secondary school students and their success in
the religious culture and knowledge of ethics course.
• Methods: Using the form of Physical Education Course
Sportspersonship Behaviour Scale (PECSBS) and the grades of the
religious culture and knowledge of ethics course (RCKEC) from
the e-school system.
• Sample Technique: Picking 609 students attending public schools
randomly.
• Key Findings: Number of hours of physical education affects the
level of sportsmanship. By including physical activities into
RCKEC, sportsmanship level seemed to be affected positively.
Introduction

• Variables: Sportsmanship, Social Behaviour, Religious

Impact and Ethical Issues.
• Hypothesis: Since the sports proved to have a positive
effect on the character and the moral development, it is
predicted that the religious culture and knowledge of ethics
course (RCKEC) has a significant role on the students’
sportsmanship level.
• Secondary Resources.
• Background information:
Defining the sportsmanship behaviour according to

Literature previous studies.

Discussing how sportsmanship has been lacking in
Review between students and how programs in the US helped
improve sportsmanship.
The religion’s impact on social behaviour and ethics, and
the benefits of using the interdisciplinary method of
education.
• Gap: No previous studies on the relationship of the courses
taught and the sportsmanship level of students.
• Purpose: How sportsmanship level of secondary school
students relates to their success regarding the religious culture
and knowledge of ethics course.
• Method: Relational survey method to collect quantitative
data to help study the covariance among two or more
variables.

• Quantitative Data: Used statistical analysis to answer the

research question and contained a results section to display
the output.

Methodology • Sampling: 609 student participants (310 females and 299

males), with close socio-economical characters, were
picked randomly from both religious public schools and
regular public schools, with the age range 12-14 and
grades 6-8. Both schools had 2 hours of RCKEC weekly;
however, 1 hour of physical education was given in the
religious schools unlike the regular schools that had 2
hours weekly.
• Instrumentation: Using Personal Details Form, Physical
Education Course Sportspersonship Behaviour Scale
(PECSBS) and the students score average from the course
RCKEC.
 The form included questions regarding the students’ school
type, gender, grade and favourite type of sports in the
physical education course.
 The types of sports were categorized into two: Team sports
with physical contact (football, basketball, handball, etc.) ,
and Team Sports without physical contact (volleyball,
badminton, table tennis, etc).
 PECSBS: Consists 22 items, and the scale ranges from 1 TO
5 implying “Never” to “Always”. The items in the scale were
divided into two main factors: Realization of Positive
Behaviour (RPB) and Avoidance Negative Behaviours
(ANB). The score deduced from the scale is represented as
The Total Sportsmanship Behaviour.
• Data Analysis: Data was distributed into whether
they are suitable for parametric or nonparametric
analysis.
 Parametric Analysis:
1. Data with normal distribution: t-test and
Pearson correlation test.
2. Data without normal distribution: Mann
Whitney U test and Kruskall Walls test.

 Non-parametric Analysis: Used graphing

tools like kurtosis, scattering, skewness
value and histogram chart.
Results and
Discussion
• Table 1: Relationship between sportsmanship and school type:

Current Results: Sportsmanship behaviour in regular schools is better

than in religious schools due to having 2 hours of physical education
course per week.

Literature Review: No previous studies showed such relationship. A

study showed that having 2 hours or 4 hours of physical education per
week did not result in any difference to the sportsmanship level.
• Table 2: Relationship between sportsmanship and students’ gender:
Current Results: Sportsmanship for females was higher in terms of the
ANB factor than the males. However, the RPB factor did not show any
differences.

Literature Review: Previous studies showed that sportsmanship for

females is higher than males, as well, since females tend to act more
suitably in regards of ethical attitude and tend to follow rules.
• Table 3: Relationship between sportsmanship and grades:
Current Results: The research showed that students in grades 6 and 7 have
higher sportsmanship than those in grade 8.

Literature Review: Some studies stated that with the age advancement, the
fighting spirits increase as well as the competitive attitude. Others claimed
that as the students grow and have more experience with the negative social
environment, their sportsmanship decrease. Finally, some disagreed with
the fact that grades may affect the sportsmanship of the students.
• Table 4: Relationship between sportsmanship and types of favourite sports:
 Current Results: As the physical contact of a sport decreases, the possibility of
displaying antisocial behaviour decreases; thus, the sportsmanship increase. The type of
favourite sports did not change the RPB factor between students.

 Literature Review: Most studies agreed with the fact that the sportsmanship level varies
with the type of sports. Some studies discussed that students participating in individual
sports tend to have lower sportsmanship that those in teams. Additionally, university
students participating in sports with physical contact show higher level of aggression
and toughness outside the school. Finally, other studies showed that sportsmanship
level in high-school students was higher when having team sports without physical
contact, and that was proved by another study stating that sports as volleyball show
higher sportsmanship than football.
• Table 5: Relationship between sportsmanship and RCKEC:
Current Results: Research showed that values taught in RCKEC had a
positive effect on the students sportsmanship in regards of ANB;
however, RPB showed no difference per usual.

Literature Review: Although no previous studies discussed the point of

discussion displayed in the research, some studies mentioned the positive
effect of RCKEC on the ethical behaviour; thus, this gained ethics and
values help improve the sportsmanship.

investigation.
• Results Summarised.
• Physical education courses are of high importance to
teaching sports culture.
• Increasing the hours of physical education course in religious
vocational school will help improve the students’

Conclusion sportsmanship.
• Answer to the research question: The methodology executed
in this research proved that the knowledge of RCKEC helps
increase the sportsmanship level of students.
• Recommendation/Gap: Investigating the relation of
sportsmanship to other relevant courses, beside RCKEC as
well as researching the sportsmanship in various cultures.
