LAB #02 Data Communication and Networks

The document defines several key networking terms: - A console application is a program designed to run via a text-only interface like a command line. - A hostname is the nickname given to a device on a network. - A physical address refers to the hardware address of a device. - An IP address is a unique identifier for each device on a network using TCP/IP. A subnet mask separates the IP address into network and host parts. - A default gateway is the node that network software uses for addresses not in the local routing table.

Physical Address

Subnet Mask

An IP address has two components, the network address and the host address. A subnet mask separates the IP address into the network and host addresses. A Subnet mask is a 32-bit number that masks an IP address, and divides the IP address into network address and host address

Default Gateway

In computer networking, a gateway is a node (a router) on a TCP/IP network that serves as an access point to another network. A default gateway is the node on the computer network that the network software uses when an IP address does not match any other routes in the routing table.

DNS(Domain name Service) server

Internet Service Providers, also known as ISPs, generally provide access to DNS servers. A DNS server is a web server that provides guidance information for outgoing information requests. In addition, it provides detailed information for any website hosted locally, when it receives an incoming information request. DNS servers maintain a constantly updated information storehouse, containing domain name resolution information about all web sites that users have accessed through them. This database updates each time a new information request is received, and the information is retrieved from the source server.

A root name server is a name server for the Domain Name System's root zone. It directly answers requests for records in the root zone and answers other requests. This limit has determined the number of name server installations at (currently) 13 clusters, serving the needs of the entire public Internet worldwide.

Static IP and DHCP

Static IP and DHCP are two very different ways of obtaining an IP address for your computer. DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) allows your computer to automatically obtain a fully functional IP address. Every time you boot up your computer, your operating system retrieves a new IP address. Static IP is a manual way of obtaining an IP address for your computer. The IP address is predetermined and always the same
