牛背鷺屬（學名：Bubulcus）為鷺科的一個屬，由法國博物學家夏爾·呂西安·波拿巴於1855年進行命名，來自同字的中世紀拉丁語“牧牛者”之意。[2]該屬下轄西牛背鹭及牛背鹭兩物種，[3]藉由西牛背鹭的其中一個異名為Ardea bubulcus的重名關係，該物種成為本屬的模式種。[4][5][1]然而在某些分類中會將兩個物種視為單一物種，此時本屬則為單型屬。[6][7][8]
