Wikipedia in 2014

Usernames are still over-zealously patrolled, turning away potentially useful contributors in droves.

This makes me sad. –xenotalk 14:03, 15 January 2014 (UTC)

Username Change

I request the change of my Username, but nobody declined or changed it. Later, when I went to see if anything had changed, it was gone. I put in another request, but why was my previous one not answered and deleted? -Pending(tell me I screwed up —Preceding undated comment added 20:36, 15 January 2014 (UTC)

You had two requests going at once [1]. In the first request, you forgot to notify the target user. So I deleted the first request [2], since the second request was in the right chronological position to be fulfilled after the hold period. –xenotalk 20:39, 15 January 2014 (UTC)

Harvard University Library --> Harvard Library

Dear Xeno,

You commented on an issue regarding this page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harvard_University_Library "Not done; I believe this user wants us to change the name of the Harvard University Library page to The Harvard Library. Perhaps someone could look into that? –xenotalk 00:13, 24 January 2014 (UTC)" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Changing_username/Simple#Harvard_University_Library_.E2.86.92_The_Harvard_Library)

You are correct; the request, by User:Kpoplowski (Kira Poplowski) is that the page name be changed to reflect the fact that Harvard University Library is no longer the name of the organization to which the article refers. The correct name is "The Harvard Library." This name can be found in all current communications issued by the Harvard Library, as on the official library portal (also, please note the logo): http://library.harvard.edu/.

Dr. Poplowski, who recommended the change, is the Director of Communications for Harvard Library (https://www.directory.harvard.edu/phonebook/submitSearch.do;jsessionid=7F6775EBE274AE285F0861DF25770F09). I report to her and am following up on her behalf.

Thanks for your help and please let me know if I should contact someone else or use some other method to communicate about this issue.

Best,

Thomas dodson harvard (talk) 21:19, 24 January 2014 (UTC)

You could file this at Wikipedia:Requested moves. Or someone on my talk page could take a look and action it if they thought it appropriate. –xenotalk 21:38, 27 January 2014 (UTC)
If you're the owner of user:Harvardlibrary, you could post to your talk page a new suggested name I could rename it to and then that account could probably carry out the move. –xenotalk 21:45, 27 January 2014 (UTC)

Thank you

User:Crystal pointinside

You recently renamed Crystal pointinside (talk · contribs) to Crystalle (talk · contribs). A few days later, an editor edited using the "Crystal pointinside". If this is the same editor, the account should be blocked as it is redundant, confusing, and a conflict-of-interest/promotional account. If it is a different editor, the one edit that he or she made indicates that it is a coi/promo account and must be renamed. I haven't put a username-change/coi template on the user page, but I would ask you to consider putting a username-block on the account and perhaps reminding the editor that if it's the same person, to use the Crystalle account instead. Thanks. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 17:05, 21 February 2014 (UTC)

If you could just ask the user to start using the new name, I don't see that the old name necessarily needs to be blocked, but you could do that also if you wish. Ask them to log out and log in to the new name. It happens a lot because of cookies and SUL, it's not something they're doing on purpose. –xenotalk 18:30, 21 February 2014 (UTC)
Thanks for the go-ahead to block this user, but I do not carry the mop. I have left a note on the re-created user's talk page asking her (or him) to log out and either use the renamed account, request a name-change, or create a new account. Hopefully this will be the end of it. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 19:32, 21 February 2014 (UTC)

CHU help

In response to your decline, I'd forgotten that second rename! Eek! Thanks for handling that request and thank you for all the help and advice you've given me at CHU in the (almost) month since I've been a bureaucrat. Much appreciated. :) Acalamari 14:14, 27 February 2014 (UTC)

No problem! You're doing great.
At some point I have to wonder if they're just trolling us, but AGF and all. If it was an account bearing a real name, I'd give them the benefit of the doubt but it isn't. –xenotalk 14:21, 27 February 2014 (UTC)
Hey, thanks. :)
I just assumed it was a case of someone continually logging in to check if their account had been deleted and instead ended up re-creating it, but all we can do is see if they come back again.
By the way, while I'm here, are bureaucrats still limited by a user's edit count, or is that no longer a factor? Just asking because I noticed that the other day you performed this rename of someone with 100,000+ edits, albeit you had trouble with all his subpages moving with the rename. I seem to recall there being a limit before steward intervention was required, but I might be mistaken. Thanks! Acalamari 21:42, 27 February 2014 (UTC)
I think the limit was raised to something crazy, like a million (or maybe not at all?). –xenotalk 21:44, 27 February 2014 (UTC)

<fryface.jpg> Not sure if sarcastic or just unnecessarily thankful . . . –xenotalk 21:00, 10 March 2014 (UTC)
Yeah, it was indeed intended to be ambiguous. I am not sure why you: (1) offered to help me; (2) read my message; (3) promptly deleted my message; and (4) never replied back to my message. That's clearly less than helpful. Particularly so, for an administrator. And, I don't consider an "edit summary" on your Page History to be any sort of meaningful reply, when a user poses a question to you as an administrator; particularly, a user with whom you affirmatively chose to interact (and potentially on whose behalf to intercede). No problem, though. I could see that you were less than interested in replying to me, much less helping me. I came to my peace with that, and I have moved on. Best of luck to you. You needn't reply to this, as I will not be checking back on your Talk Page. Best, Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 23:31, 10 March 2014 (UTC)
@Joseph A. Spadaro: Point of order: I didn't offer to help you - I asked what help you needed. In future, when posting a helpme template (particularly an "adminhelp", you should indicate the help you need up front alongside the posted template. This way, the administrator or user can swiftly decide if they are able to offer the type of help you are looking for. If you had needed help with something simple (janitorial, etc.), then I would have been happy to help; but the help you sought was something more complicated and potentially drama-laden, something which I unfortunately didn't have the time or energy on hand to help you. I'm sorry if I inadvertantly misled you into thinking that I stood ready to help you with whatever you happened to need, but my main goal in asking you "what help do you need?" was to prompt you into correctly and appropriately asking for the help you sought alongside the template as suggested by the template's instructions. Best regards, –xenotalk 01:50, 11 March 2014 (UTC)

Follow up

Hi there. "Good grief" implies that I am asking an unreasonable question. (Or perhaps I am misreading that phrase on your part?) Do you think my question/concern is not valid and unreasonable? That is, if one is accused of a BLP violation, how does one resolve that question? I thought that the proper route was to post an "administrator help" tag? Was I wrong in doing so? What is the proper route that I should have taken? Please advise. Thanks. Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 18:43, 13 March 2014 (UTC)

Good grief implies that I think you should drop the stick and move on with your life. And as I said [4]: in future, if there is a disagreement over whether some particular something violates BLP, you could post to WP:AN for additional opinions. –xenotalk 18:45, 13 March 2014 (UTC)
Thanks. You did not answer my question, which was: Do you think my question/concern is not valid and unreasonable? That is, if one is accused of a BLP violation, how does one resolve that question?. I personally think that it's a valid question/concern. And I had assumed that it was the administrator's role here to help editors with such questions. I interpret "you should drop the stick and move on with your life" as just another way of saying "make our job as administrators that much easier by sweeping this issue under the rug and pretending that it never happened". Thanks. Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 18:51, 13 March 2014 (UTC)
Yes, I think your excessive hand-wringing over this is unreasonable. It has taken up a lot of James' time. The original issue is long since moot. Your dispute partner has been blocked. What more do you want? –xenotalk 18:56, 13 March 2014 (UTC)
What more do I want? When exactly was I notified that the User was blocked? How was I supposed to know that the User was blocked, in regards to my issue? Asking "What more do I want?" assumes that I have this information. What makes you think that I was made aware of – or that I would possess – this information? Please advise. Thanks. Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 19:02, 13 March 2014 (UTC)
At 9:07 am UTC yesterday. –xenotalk 19:11, 13 March 2014 (UTC)
What are you talking about? That comment left at my Talk Page showed me that an editor made an edit to the Reference Desk Page. It shows me what the page looked like before his edit and after his edit. In other words, it shows me what text he added in and what text he deleted out. (I believe that this is called a "diff", but I am not sure.) What on earth does this have to do with a user being blocked? And what does this have to do with me being notified of such block? Am I somehow mis-reading that "diff"? Is there something in there somewhere by which I should have seen some information about a block? Please advise. Thanks. Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 19:41, 13 March 2014 (UTC)
There are two diffs. Did you look at the second one? –xenotalk 19:46, 13 March 2014 (UTC)
By the way, since you have decided to help me – which I do appreciate – can you just tell me a quick blurb about what that ANI page is all about? What is that supposed to be used for? Thanks. Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 18:53, 13 March 2014 (UTC)
ANI is supposed to be used to report incidents that require immediate administrator attention. That said, I would (and do) avoid it at all costs. I was suggesting WP:AN for future, not ANI. –xenotalk 18:56, 13 March 2014 (UTC)
Thanks. Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 19:02, 13 March 2014 (UTC)
You're welcome. –xenotalk 19:11, 13 March 2014 (UTC)
Wait a second. Is the AN and the ANI two different things? If so, I missed that. So, therefore. my question above is referring to the link that you referred me to for the future. So, in other words ... can you just tell me a quick blurb about what that AN (not ANI) page is all about? What is that supposed to be used for? Thanks. Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 22:13, 13 March 2014 (UTC)
It's a fairly well-watched board that usually generates light rather than heat. So it would be a good place to ask for second opinions on, for example, whether a particular something is a BLP violation. –xenotalk 22:23, 13 March 2014 (UTC)

Question about RfA closing

Question: Will a 'crat closing an RfA consider comments in the RfA's talk page? ("Addition on the talk page" is included with my comment in the discussion section of the RfA.) Reason: I want to be sure the depth and strength of my comment in the discussion is considered in what is likely to be a close call. I may add to comments on the main RfA page discussion if the talk page isn't always reviewed. Thanks, DocTree (ʞlɐʇ·ʇuoɔ) Join WER 20:38, 17 March 2014 (UTC)

I can't speak for all bureaucrats, but yes, I typically review the talk page prior to closing (especially in a close-call situation). That said, if you want to be sure some particular comment is reviewed by the closing bureaucrat, it would be best to place it on the main page. –xenotalk 20:52, 17 March 2014 (UTC)

Help!

Hi, I'm Anup, recently renamed from User:IndianWikipedian on my request at WP:CHU#usurp by you. Thanks a ton for that! I've a query over my new renamed account, I'm actually a little bit confused, about "unified login". I made an unsuccessful attempt to activate my global account for the username "Anup". It says, password on other wiki differs from mine primary account(en.wiki), therefore it could not be integrated on those. No SUL account existed for the previous user. 17 non-enwiki unattached accounts existed with the username, with 5 total edits. I wish to have a unified login with this username. Where am I supposed to proceed with? A usurp request at each and every other wiki? Thanks! Anupmehra -Let's talk! 10:56, 19 March 2014 (UTC)

@Anup: According to special:CentralAuth/Anup, you've successfully created a global account with Anup. Those other accounts aren't yours and yes, unfortunately you will have to usurp them at each project if you desire them to be part of your SUL (see m:RENAMELINKS) or m:SR/SUL in the case of projects without local bureaucrats). Hope that helps, –xenotalk 11:49, 19 March 2014 (UTC)

Thank you

As you will recall, you and I had a rather lengthy discussion about my alleged violation of BLP when I had asked a question on a Wikipedia Reference Desk (about Oscar Pistorius). You had initially responded to an "administrator help" request that I had posted on my Talk Page. I came back here to close out that discussion with you. However, I see that the discussion has been removed from your Talk Page and has been archived. So, I just wanted to say "thanks" for your help in the matter. I do appreciate it. Thanks again. Thanks for cleaning up the WP:Sanctions pages

  The Original Barnstar
for cleaning up the mess with the pages that now reside at Wikipedia:Sanctions (essay) and Wikipedia:General sanctions. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 20:51, 20 March 2014 (UTC)
Thanks for the barnstar... There is still some mess, though (people who wanted to link to the essay after it was put at that ill-advised spot)...but not as bad as before and the hatnote should take care of any remaining cases. Cheers, –xenotalk 20:52, 20 March 2014 (UTC)

Trivial background

Hello, Xeno! I saw this at ANI and found it interesting because it seems I may have added to the confusion by trying to clear it up. Back in August, I (it's a dynamic IP) asked about BLANKING on an admin's talk page. After gaining clarification, I then asked for this edit request on WT:USERPAGE. That edit request linked to WP:SANCTIONS. You said you were going to put something together, so I thought this may tangentially help you out, even if only in the most minute way. ;) Rgrds. --64.85.214.162 (talk) 05:09, 21 March 2014 (UTC)

Here's a Barnstar for you

  The Civility Barnstar
Hi, Xeno. You've earned this Civility Barnstar, as I think you're the first editor who ever thanked me for reverting him. :) But that doesn't mean I'm not still thinking about whether or not to revert you again, on the basis that linking to the official sanctions page seems to make more sense, and to be more usefully informative, at least at first glance - though it will take some reading and thinking time before I make up my mind.

(By the way, I'm assuming a name like Xeno makes you male; if not, my apologies)

Tlhslobus (talk) 16:36, 21 March 2014 (UTC)
 • lol =) Thanks for the barnstar. If it helps your decision-making, the original editor who linked it meant to link to the essay; which was recently moved. –xenotalk 16:43, 21 March 2014 (UTC)
Thanks, Xeno - on wiser reflection I think I'll just trust you, on the basis that trusting you spares me a lot of boring and time-consuming checking and reading and thinking about something that almost certainly isn't worth the time and the boredom :) Tlhslobus (talk) 04:31, 23 March 2014 (UTC)

English language Wiki - with French sources

Dear Xeno - A question regarding sources and citations.

I've encountered a major edit, written in English, which is based upon French language sources. The editor has provided page numbers, implying that other editors can read French. How is an English-only speaker/reader to verify the source material?

Moreover, would it be appropriate for the editor to include the passage from the source? In French? Or the English translation? What are the WikiRules that apply here? Perhaps you can refer me someone who knows if you are not familiar with the issue. 36hourblock (talk) 20:56, 29 March 2014 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) If he is using cite book, he can use |quote= to include the original-language quote. There isn't a standardized Wiki-way (that I know of) to include a translated quote, but you can piggyback on the quote parameter by putting the English in parenthesis or italics and clearly marking it as a translation, e.g. "quote=Mexicanos, al grito de Guerra / El acero, aprestad y el bridon, (Machine translation to English by Google Translate on 2014-03-29: Mexicans, at the cry of War / The steel and lend your bridon,)", replacing "Machine translation to English by Google Translate" with "Translation by User:Usernamegoeshere" if it's translated by a Wikipedia editor rather than a computer. Note that due to the still-poor quality of most machine translations, they are NOT recommended. If a machine translation is all you have, consider posting the original quote and machine translation on the article talk page and ask for help from a human who speaks the language. If the person adding the reference is using the cite book or similar templates, he should also use the |language= and |trans_title= parameters and, if applicable, the |trans_chapter= parameter. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 23:33, 29 March 2014 (UTC) Update: You may want to read Wikipedia:Verifiability#Non-English_sources and Wikipedia:Citing sources#Additional annotation. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 23:37, 29 March 2014 (UTC)

But I think it is actually just someone who is linkspamming their self-published news site (and this is not the only article where they are doing it: [10]). Something for the blacklist, perhaps. –xenotalk 23:29, 15 April 2014 (UTC)
Hmm, interesting, ok. I had looked at the news site and it didn't seem particularly spammy, though the two links in question were just wire service stories. Thanks for the info. 70.36.142.114 (talk) 10:22, 16 April 2014 (UTC)

I have found different answers to this question in past discussions...

Greetings. I have found different answers to this question before in past discussions from Admins and I figured I would just ask a Bureaucrat to get a definitive answer. I have edited Wikipedia under 3 accounts previously. On all of these accounts, I have never been blocked, banned, sanctioned, or restricted for any reason whatsoever. I wish to have a clean start, and begin using a new account, permanently for various reasons. I have tagged all three of the previous accounts with the RETIRED template as recommended by WP:Clean start. Is there anything else I need to do to ensure I will never be accused of being a sock or am I good to go? Thanks for any help/advice you can offer. 2602:301:77F9:2100:9D52:5D26:5029:7A1C (talk) 00:49, 21 April 2014 (UTC)

As of the reply you replied me here: Changing username page, I would like to tell that the accounts are mine and I would like to know if I will be able to merge it.

New admin questions

A few questions right off the bat... Is there an accepted amount of time I should wait before deleting Ax CSD flagged pages? Seems as though the author should be given a fair amount of time to contest the deletion, yet I don't see anything about this at Wikipedia:CSD#Procedure for administrators. Secondly, how should I approach my desire to attain edit filter rights? I have no immediate plans of creating any filters, but I'd love to be able to see them. I also have a BS in computer science and vast experience with regex. Would it be inappropriate to grant myself this user right? Thanks! — MusikAnimal talk 03:22, 29 April 2014 (UTC)

Now that you're an admin, you should be able to see all edit filter details and logs. If you want to edit a filter though, you can just give yourself EFM rights. Legoktm (talk) 03:50, 29 April 2014 (UTC)
@MusikAnimal: Interesting question regarding 'speedy deletion'. I'll admit I'm not active in the deletion process, so I'm probably not the best person to ask. I don't think there is any custom as regards a wait time from tagging to deletion and indeed I believe some administrators will speedy delete-on-sight without even the tag, so in this cases there really would be no "object time" for the creator. My personal feeling would be that a good faith creation should be given some time to object, but like you said, this is not in the guidelines. I'm pretty sure pages that meet the criteria for speedy deletion can be deleted without delay.
Legoktm is right, you can grant yourself EFM as your own discretion. It shouldn't be needed to view filters, I believe administrators are able to view private filters by default, though I remember a bugzilla kicking around a few years ago on this that I'm not sure was solved. –xenotalk 11:58, 29 April 2014 (UTC)
Gotcha. I'm not sure how I feel about the lack of a suggested wait period. It should at least be touched on in the guidelines. I guess I could bring this up at WT:CSD? Or is there some admin-land where I should be making such proposals? Thanks! — MusikAnimal talk 14:47, 29 April 2014 (UTC)
Yes, probably WT:CSD or WT:Deletion policy. Thinking about it more though, the intent of the CSD criteria are to allow administrators to delete immediately - so adding a delay (even for certain criteria) might introduce more complexity than is desired in the system. Just a thought. –xenotalk 15:00, 29 April 2014 (UTC)

Statistical Question regarding Wikipedia

Hi,

Thanks for the Usurp! I have a question regarding deleted articles. How many articles excluding redirects and blatant cruft have been deleted? And also how many article currently deleted have survived at least one AfD including no consensus? Is it easy to get me these numbers? Thanks! Valoem talk contrib 22:21, 29 April 2014 (UTC)

No problem.
I think it would be pretty hard to give an accurate count for what you've described; I'm not sure if anyone has attempted to calculate this. See Wikipedia:Statistics. –xenotalk 22:38, 29 April 2014 (UTC)
Thanks! I've seen these numbers before, but was confused about the inclusion criteria. Does this including all articles included speedies or just AfDs. I've always assumed that there was probably tons of cruft nearing 20 million articles, but the number I'm getting for total deleted is 5,625,193. Is this all encompassing? Valoem talk contrib 13:57, 30 April 2014 (UTC)
Where are you getting that number from? –xenotalk 14:04, 30 April 2014 (UTC)
Which one the 20 million was the high end of how many articles were deleted. My lower guess is 10 to 12 million articles not in the main space. My estimate was from the fact I feel most articles created are deleted at a possible 3 to 1 ratio. The 5,625,193 I got by adding these numbers found here under the deletions section. Valoem talk contrib 14:13, 30 April 2014 (UTC)
That only shows the top 100 deleters, I think. –xenotalk 14:28, 30 April 2014 (UTC)
My goal was based on the many controversial deletes I have been seeing. I was hoping for a sister project called Wikipedia Deep which is undetectable through search engines, but can be a place where delete article can be retained permanently for further edit. Wikideep, has no requirements for notability only WP:V. I am aware of how ambitious this project may be and was hoping to garner support. Valoem talk contrib 15:28, 30 April 2014 (UTC)
A lot of deletions are for copyvios, privacy vios, attack pages, BLP problems etc. We are never going to restore those. There is a Wikia with pages that have been speedy-deleted for ordinary notability reasons (speedydeletion.wikia.com) but it's not under the WMF umbrella and it is a bit careful about what it preserves. Most speedy deletions are basically spam, and republishing spam is pretty far from the WMF mission, though maybe acceptable for Wikia. 70.36.142.114 (talk) 05:53, 6 May 2014 (UTC)
I think you're also using the word "articles" in a non-standard way, and the word you mean is "pages". Articles are pages in mainspace and there are around 4.5 million visible ones and (wild guess) maybe a million deleted ones. "Pages" includes all namespaces and there have been around 42.7 million created (based on an API query about a page created today found from Special:NewPagesFeed) and 32.8 million visible (Special:Statistics). Lots of pages in user and project space are for internal purposes only and were never intended for general public consumption, and are deleted when they're no longer needed because keeping them visible isn't a great idea. And if you look at the new pages feed you'll see an awful lot of the new pages are cruft that gets deleted for good reason. 70.36.142.114 (talk) 16:55, 6 May 2014 (UTC)

SRF-old alternate (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · target logs · block log · list user · global contribs · central auth · Google)

I came along the WP:CHU, WP:CHUS, and WP:CHUU pages, but I can't decide which is best appropriate for my situation. Can you help me out?
I have two alternate accounts, Singapore Rail Fan and I love Calgary and Edmonton. I forgot the password to the Singapore Rail Fan account, which has a note saying that it is my sole alternate account. (See contribs.) On the other hand, I created the I love Calgary and Edmonton account, which left a note on my talk page saying that it is my new alternate account, which I confirmed through this account. I want to change
I love Calgary and Edmonton to Singapore Rail Fan
and
Singapore Rail Fan to SRF-old alternate
I appreciate your response, as I was tempted to do these two requests in one but I am confused at that time. Japanese Rail Fan 07:24, 13 May 2014 (UTC)
P.S. My timezone is UTC+8.

Thanks Xeno for doing the renames. I think there's no need to make the SUL as the two accounts have only edited here on enwikipedia. Japanese Rail Fan 15:24, 14 May 2014 (UTC)

Usurpation request at de.wikipedia.org

Hi Xeno. I'd like to see if I can wrap up global unification for my account, Waldhorn. My home wiki is at en.wikipedia.org. A remaining unattached account is at de.wikipedia.org. See Special:CentralAuth/Waldhorn. Could you point me to the correct page for making the usurpation request? If I understand correctly, it must originate at de.wikipedia.org and not at WP:Changing_username/Usurpations? Many thanks.  —Waldhorn (talk) 05:48, 1 June 2014 (UTC)

de:WP:USURP. Good luck! –xenotalk 12:55, 1 June 2014 (UTC)
Thanks! The English version of that page makes no mention about allowing exceptions, in the case of SUL requests, to their requirement that "the account to take over has 0 valid contributions". The English wiki appears to allow it as long at the target account doesn't raise an objection. Do you know if the usurpation policy on this point is uniform between sites? Thanks again. —Waldhorn (talk) 06:30, 2 June 2014 (UTC)
It is not uniform; my understanding is that de.wiki has stricter policies regarding usurpation of the account. But you could always ask - just mention that you are trying to unify your account. One day when if truly globally-unified username comes around, the account may be renamed to "Waldhorn~dewiki" or somesuch to make room for you.–xenotalk 14:49, 2 June 2014 (UTC)

Template:uw-coi-username

I note your disagreement with my use of this template [11]. We disagreed on this subject before, three years ago here. I note you have disagreed with another editor on this point here. Administrator Daniel Case disagrees with you on this point as well (here). I understand your position, but at best (for your case) guideline and policy are unclear on the subject, and there's plenty of room for different views on the subject. I do not place uw-coi-username unless it is blatantly obvious the name is tied to an existing business. In less than blatant cases, I wait for the editor to edit. In either case, I do not report the account to WP:UAA until the editor edits. That instruction is made very clear at WP:UAA. Wikipedia:Username_policy#Talk_to_the_user does not say 'wait for the editor to edit'. WP:UAA does say wait for editing to begin to report, but does not ask us to wait to discuss. According to the policy, uw-coi-username is discussing. If you still feel motivated to encourage me to stop, this would be an excellent opportunity for you to open an RFC, perhaps at WT:UPOL. Thanks, --Hammersoft (talk) 02:02, 17 June 2014 (UTC)

Also, except in extreme cases, it is probably not worth taking action unless the user has made at least one recent edit. If a user registers a name with a company but never uses it to edit, where is the COI? Where is the promotion? It's just a waste of everyone's time. –xenotalk 03:20, 17 June 2014 (UTC)
Good memory, by the way. I note you never answered my question 3 years ago. –xenotalk 03:23, 17 June 2014 (UTC)
 • I understand we disagree. I think there are excellent reasons to use the uw-coi-username template even before editing commences. As I noted, this may be an excellent opportunity to initiate an RFC on the matter. --Hammersoft (talk) 00:07, 19 June 2014 (UTC)

Friendly request.

Hello there xeno, I've been going around asking people if they are interesting in updating their signatures to be compliant with the HTML5 standardization because some elements (such as <font>) are being dropped by some browsers already, and it is just a matter of time I expect before they are dropped by more. If you are willing to update your signature, I suggest replacing:

–<span style="font-family:verdana; color:black;">xeno</span>talk

with:

–<b style="font-family:verdana;color:#000">xeno</b>talk

which will result in a 118 character long signature (10 characters shorter) with an appearance of: –xenotalk
compared to your existing 128 character long signature of: –xenotalk
— Either way. Happy editing! — Technical 13 (etc) 19:41, 24 June 2014 (UTC)

Renaming of account on Commons

Hi there. I recently had my account renamed from Abhishek191288 to the current one which you performed. But on commons, I still have to login using my old account name. Is there any way, I can change my user login across all projects of wiki?  LeoFrank  Talk 04:08, 5 July 2014 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) Hello LeoFrank, As far as getting a name change at Commons, I'm sure a post at any crat talk page would get the ball rolling. Globally is a different matter, as of now the only way is to go to each project you're active on a make a request, prolly to a 'crat talk page, there is however talk of Stewards being able to do Global re-names as mentioned in this request by Writ Keeper. Xeno may have more on the subject. Hope this starts the help. Cheers, Mlpearc (open channel) 04:52, 5 July 2014 (UTC)
Yes as Mlpearc says until global renaming is available you unfortunately have to use. m:RENAMELINKS or m:SR/SUL to request for each wiki. Also hit special:MergeAccount after the renames. –xenotalk 05:06, 5 July 2014 (UTC)

Quick question

Hi Xeno, I noticed that you've performed some renames since Writ Keeper's note on BN. Am I right in thinking that it's okay for us to keep renaming provided that the person requesting a rename only has an account on enwiki and nowhere else, as to not fragment any global accounts? Just want to clarify, so thanks in advance! Acalamari 15:26, 12 July 2014 (UTC)

I'd say it's fine in those cases and until we actually decide what we're doing with this new facility and have all the right pages updated. –xenotalk 15:30, 12 July 2014 (UTC)
Sounds reasonable; at least it'll help prevent too much of a build-up on CHU/S, anyway. Thanks! Acalamari 15:34, 12 July 2014 (UTC)

Two quick questions

Regarding my usurpation request (Geneb1955 → SlimJim), is there still the possibility that I could get this and I just need to be patient? I don't want to let this languish and I don't want to do anything that would jeopardize any chance of getting it because of not being savvy after being away for several years.

I also could use some guidance on the bit of information from AnomieBOT about “1 non-enwiki unattached account exists with the requesting user's name, with 0 total edits.” I have no idea how to check that out. I only have this one enwiki account as far as I know. Am I concerned about nothing important since there are no edits or forgotten something created back when I used Geneb1955 for most things or is there a way to find the source for this. Appreciate your work and willingness to be so helpful. Thanks, --Geneb1955Talk 15:43, 11 July 2014 (UTC)

You would probably have to talk to hu:User:SlimJim and ask them if they would consider renaming. As for the other account, see sulutil:Geneb1955. There is an account at metawiki with this name. It could be yours, try special:MergeAccount or usurp at m:SR/SULxenotalk 15:47, 11 July 2014 (UTC)

I still don't see what his username has anything to do with it. If his last name is "Threston", he's entirely permitted to use the username "AustralianThreston". So there is no username issue there at all. So forking a uw-coi-username template that concerns itself with inappropriate _username_ to deal with some particular pov or coi edits still doesn't make any sense to me. (If the guy was named RandomUser2581 you're still going to have to talk to him about any perceived coi or pov pushing you see going on.) –xenotalk 13:00, 1 August 2014 (UTC)

LDR

Hi Xeno,

I saw your edit to LDR. I'm not sure where in WP:SELFREF it is stated that those links should be removed from disambig pages. Should the heading to MOS also be removed then? I should note that I've found the headings on both articles to be useful.--ɱ (talk) 19:25, 13 August 2014 (UTC)

As a Wikipedia editor, these headings may be useful, but to the majority of the readers they will appear confusing or unprofessional and they only save a very limited number of editors three keypresses (who should rightly know that to access a project shortcut, they should use WP: not type a mainspace article into the searchbox). See some of my recent contributions for more examples. I agree that the WP:SELFREF probably needs to be made more clear to express the widely-held belief that we shouldn't be unnecessarily be causing editors to fall into the back workings of the enyclopedia for the very small convenience it might afford to our advanced editors who might forget to prefix their search with WP: (especially some of the more 'MMO' aspects like [14] [15] [16]) –xenotalk 19:30, 13 August 2014 (UTC)
Okay, I suppose that makes sense. So you will remove the heading for the MOS page?--ɱ (talk) 20:07, 13 August 2014 (UTC)
I'm not going to do a blanket removal of WP:SELFREFHATs; I'm currently working on the most inappropriate ones, and MOS isn't up there. –xenotalk 20:11, 13 August 2014 (UTC)
OK.--ɱ (talk) 20:20, 13 August 2014 (UTC)

SELFREF

Hi, regarding your reversal of my edit here, are you planning to remove virtually all WP:SELFREFs? There are hundreds of such hatnotes, and I particularly find them quite useful, speaking as an editor. You seem to be concerned about the "bad impression" that such links might give to anonymous visitors. In this case, I'l like to propose a compromise solution: Selfref could be improved in such a way that it would only display the hatnote to logged-in users, what about that? —capmo (talk) 02:13, 14 August 2014 (UTC)

I'm not planning on removing them all. Please feel free to revert any of my individual removals if you feel they should remain. I don't think your compromise solution would fly for some of the others who also feel these kind of self-referential links should be used in certain cases for helping new users/IPs. There's a discussion ongoing linked from WP:SELFREFHAT, feel free to contribute there so we can come to some kind of consensus on which of these links are good and which are not.
As regards "autoreview", I still don't really think it's appropriate. Editors should know to prefix WP: before they do a search for some internal project term, and autoreview is an advanced editing topic. But again You can undo my edit and I won't resubmit it. –xenotalk 02:26, 14 August 2014 (UTC)
I understand your point, and you're probably right with respect to Autoreview. It took me some time and searching to discover that this user right had been renamed to "autopatrolled", that's why I thought a hatnote might be useful to others. The idea of typing WP:Autoreview didn't cross my mind back then; I must remember to try it more often. —capmo (talk) 03:03, 14 August 2014 (UTC)

An important message about renaming users

Dear Xeno,

I am cross-posting this message to many places to make sure everyone who is a Wikimedia Foundation project bureaucrat receives a copy. If you are a bureaucrat on more than one wiki, you will receive this message on each wiki where you are a bureaucrat.

As you may have seen, work to perform the Wikimedia cluster-wide single-user login finalisation (SUL finalisation) is taking place. This may potentially effect your work as a local bureaucrat, so please read this message carefully.

Why is this happening? As currently stated at the global rename policy, a global account is a name linked to a single user across all Wikimedia wikis, with local accounts unified into a global collection. Previously, the only way to rename a unified user was to individually rename every local account. This was an extremely difficult and time-consuming task, both for stewards and for the users who had to initiate discussions with local bureaucrats (who perform local renames to date) on every wiki with available bureaucrats. The process took a very long time, since it's difficult to coordinate crosswiki renames among the projects and bureaucrats involved in individual projects.

The SUL finalisation will be taking place in stages, and one of the first stages will be to turn off Special:RenameUser locally. This needs to be done as soon as possible, on advice and input from Stewards and engineers for the project, so that no more accounts that are unified globally are broken by a local rename to usurp the global account name. Once this is done, the process of global name unification can begin. The date that has been chosen to turn off local renaming and shift over to entirely global renaming is 15 September 2014, or three weeks time from now. In place of local renames is a new tool, hosted on Meta, that allows for global renames on all wikis where the name is not registered will be deployed.

Your help is greatly needed during this process and going forward in the future if, as a bureaucrat, renaming users is something that you do or have an interest in participating in. The Wikimedia Stewards have set up, and are in charge of, a new community usergroup on Meta in order to share knowledge and work together on renaming accounts globally, called Global renamers. Stewards are in the process of creating documentation to help global renamers to get used to and learn more about global accounts and tools and Meta in general as well as the application format. As transparency is a valuable thing in our movement, the Stewards would like to have at least a brief public application period. If you are an experienced renamer as a local bureaucrat, the process of becoming a part of this group could take as little as 24 hours to complete. You, as a bureaucrat, should be able to apply for the global renamer right on Meta by the requests for global permissions page on 1 September, a week from now.

In the meantime please update your local page where users request renames to reflect this move to global renaming, and if there is a rename request and the user has edited more than one wiki with the name, please send them to the request page for a global rename.

Stewards greatly appreciate the trust local communities have in you and want to make this transition as easy as possible so that the two groups can start working together to ensure everyone has a unique login identity across Wikimedia projects. Completing this project will allow for long-desired universal tools like a global watchlist, global notifications and many, many more features to make work easier.

If you have any questions, comments or concerns about the SUL finalisation, read over the Help:Unified login page on Meta and leave a note on the talk page there, or on the talk page for global renamers. You can also contact me on my talk page on meta if you would like. I'm working as a bridge between Wikimedia Foundation Engineering and Product Development, Wikimedia Stewards, and you to assure that SUL finalisation goes as smoothly as possible; this is a community-driven process and I encourage you to work with the Stewards for our communities.

Thank you for your time. -- Keegan (WMF) talk 18:24, 25 August 2014 (UTC)

Help on removal of discussion comments

Please take a look at this discussion page. The comments are very crude, and, in my opinion, have no place here. I was about to remove them, but decided I should contact an experienced user to make sure that was within policy. Thanks! Writing Enthusiast (talk) 22:01, 4 September 2014 (UTC)

Thanks very much for bringing that to attention. I've removed the comments. –xenotalk 22:16, 4 September 2014 (UTC)

Yes, per WP:NOTAFORUM or other policies. –xenotalk 22:34, 4 September 2014 (UTC)

Yes you could try, Stewards and global renamers are watching that page. But some of the local requests would still need to be handled by local bureaucrats (either usurps of Chander or renames from Chanderforyou to Chander , until the 15th. Hi,

I would like to ask for your help in re-naming my user name.

I have joined a participant list for a Swedish University and we should have the ending '(SLU)'.

My current name is 'Nicklas Samils' and I would like to change it to 'Nicklas Samils (SLU)'

All the best,

Finding my userpage by searching

Hi Xeno,

Since you very kindly changed my username for me from 'Nick B 1994' to 'Lofty Londoner Nick B.', for which I am very grateful, I can't find my user page by searching 'User:...'in the search box anymore. It really helps being able to do this when using the Wikipedia app as this is the only way to access user pages in the app. With all my previous usernames, I've been able to do this and I was wondering whether you could help me with this issue?

Regards.

Nick

Lofty Londoner Nick B. (talk) 23:36, 20 September 2014 (UTC)

I guess you mean how the search box autocompletes ? You might have to wait for your new name to be built into the search cache. In the meantime you can still access you user page by going to user nick b 1994. Hope that helps. –xenotalk 01:44, 21 September 2014 (UTC)

That is exactly what I am asking and I thank you for your quick reply. Is there anything that can be done by anyone or better still anyone I can personally contact to make my new username be built in to the search cache. If it is however just a waiting game, how long do I need to wait for this to happen? I've never had to wait this long with my previous username changes!

Sorry to be bothering you.

Nick

To be honest, I'm not really sure. Maybe MZMcBride or Anomie would know? –xenotalk 17:06, 21 September 2014 (UTC)
I can confirm that "User:Lofty Londoner" in the search input does not currently auto-suggest the appropriate user page. I think/thought autocomplete was based on number of incoming links, but I'm not sure why "User:Nick B 1994" would auto-suggest but not the newer name. It could be that the auto-suggest index is still out of date/lagged, but it's been nearly a week since the page move... strange. --MZMcBride (talk) 23:10, 21 September 2014 (UTC)

I will contact them then.

Thank you for your help and sorry to have bothered you.

Usurpation Query

sulutil:Nick B.

Sorry Xeno, me again,

I would like to change my username to "Nick B." but have realized that this username has already been taken on many other versions of Wikipedia including the English and German Wikipedia. The "Nick B." on the English Wikipedia has made only seven edits compared to my 514 and counting. I therefore conclude, I hope rightly, that a usurpation would be possible here.

My issue arises through a SUL conflict. I have a global account and there is already a global account with the username "Nick B." and its local account is on the German Wikipedia. Should I be successful with my request that the global account user "Nick B." change their username to something else, will it be possible for me to take the username "Nick B."?

Regards

Nick

Lofty Londoner Nick B. (talk) 00:09, 23 September 2014 (UTC)

Current user Nick B. would have to request a global rename to something else for you to take that name. Otherwise there is no problem, I think. –xenotalk 01:10, 23 September 2014 (UTC)

Attention please Admin

I was just wondering how to approach the administrators for page creation. I have added a request for page creation at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Requested_articles/Applied_arts_and_sciences#Schools.2C_colleges.2C_and_universities

I am made to understand that only admins can create a this page again as it was having the promotional content. Now the promotional content is removed and I want to have this page up and running with the basic content.

I am talking about the following page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Lakes_Institute_of_Management

Could you please look into this and suggest the move forward.

Rename of user to FACT CHECKER

Hi,

Just thought you might want to highlight to this particular user that — at least on English Wikinews — this will be deemed an unacceptable username due to the implication of authority. I'm surprised it got through here on Wikipedia as well. --Brian McNeil /talk 18:32, 25 September 2014 (UTC)

Indeed, FACT CHECKER could you please consider your username in view of global username policies and perhaps file a further request for a new name. Locally we do have advice that discourages "Usernames that give the impression that the account has permissions which it does not have". –xenotalk 19:14, 25 September 2014 (UTC)

Hi Brian McNeil and xeno. I was not aware of the existence of Wikinews. Thank you for informing me. I might like to post on there at some point. I just changed my username yesterday, but I will try to think of an alternative username I could request. I appreciate the heads up. FACT CHECKER (talk) 20:45, 25 September 2014 (UTC)

Usurp question

Hey xeno! A few years ago, right when the SUL feature became available I claimed my name everywhere except 3 places I couldn't. (de/it/ru). The Russian people said to wait. The German admin was kind of rude and basically told me to buzz-off. Italy had no answer. I gave it up as too much trouble and promptly forgot. That was years ago. Now I remembered the issue. Went today to check WP:SUL/C and the SUL tool which reports the last edits as follows: de:5-Jun-2013 / it:30-Oct-2012 / ru:6-Mar-2013 and now also found it_wikiquote: only one edit in 2006. Do you think there is any chance we could complete the cycle after so much time has passed? Thanks for any insight. -- Alexf(talk) 15:51, 30 September 2014 (UTC)

Since bureaucrats can no longer do local renames, you should file four separate rename requests at m:SRUC requesting each target be renamed to Alexf (usurped). de:WP:USURP says it is now obsolete , ru:WP:USURP - looks shuttered as well - I'm not sure what, if any, remnants of the de.wiki or ru.wiki or it.wiki usurp policies remain. Good luck! Failing that, you will gain control of user:Alexf globally once the mw:SUL finalization is complete. –xenotalk 16:25, 30 September 2014 (UTC)
Thanks. No big deal but at least I have an idea on how to proceed. -- Alexf(talk) 16:41, 30 September 2014 (UTC)

Hey Xeno, it's Allen. How do I adopt and wish to be a bureaucrat on the English Wikipedia? --Allen (talk to me! / ctrb / E-mail me) 04:39, 25 October 2014 (UTC)

I'm not sure if I follow. If you want to learn about the adoption program see WP:ADOPT. As far as becoming a bureaucrat, you've got a long road ahead of you. You would first probably have to pass RFA. However, now that bureaucrats are no longer in charge of renaming users, there is much less of a need for new bureaucrats and I doubt we will see many new ones appointed. –xenotalk 13:54, 25 October 2014 (UTC)

Was thanking that edit meant to be a subtle way of getting my attention, or have you just been sifting through my contribs since I've returned? It's a rather obscure edit to thank me for two weeks after I made it, I'd have to say. demize (t · c) 13:28, 26 November 2014 (UTC)

I think it was that edit for help that signalled to me that you had returned to activity (which pleased me), and after seeing some more activity on your page I went to see how you responded, and saw that you did so quite deftly. So just wanted to send a note that your resumed contributions are appreciated :) Welcome back! –xenotalk 13:32, 26 November 2014 (UTC)
Thanks! I'm glad to be back. Things have changed a lot since I left, so it's taking a bit to get used to it. That and I've started working different places (specifically ANI), so it's almost like a whole new start. I see you still work CHU/U, and I think I remember reading you're a global renamer now? SUL finalization has made things pretty different since I last worked there. demize (t · c) 13:57, 26 November 2014 (UTC)

WP:CHUS

Is non-crat global renamer allowed to process request? I couldn't find any documentation about this.  Revi 12:19, 2 December 2014 (UTC)

On enwiki? In the strictest sense, no: the community has not explicitly allowed or invited users who are not enwiki bureaucrats to work on the page. And meta:Global renamers states: " Global renamers should focus on requests from their home wiki, with the potential to expand to requests from other projects as they gain experience with global renaming."
That said, there are several users who have been fulfilling requests that are not local bureaucrats and the project has not exploded. Probably such users should not decline requests, and only fulfill requests that are very obviously appropriate. Long story short, it's a grey area.
My personal wish is that those who are not enwiki bureaucrats would not act on the page until the community invites them to do so because it sortof compels local bureaucrats to evaluate the completed requests for local policy compliance resulting in duplicated effort. I'm not sure how my colleagues feel, though. Hope that helps to clarify things somewhat. –xenotalk 14:58, 2 December 2014 (UTC)
Yes, on enwiki. Thanks for clarifying. I of course focus on my homewiki (kowiki), but I was just curious.  Revi 17:20, 2 December 2014 (UTC)
Hi Xeno and Revi, apologies if my joining the conversation is unwelcome.
All accounts are global. These global names need to comply with enwiki standards, which should be global standards. Anyone who gets their name rejected on enwiki should not be able to go to ruwiki and have the rename done anyway. Enwiki bureaucrats rename hundreds of ruwiki, nlwiki and dewiki users. Global renamers rename hundreds of enwiki users on meta. We need to think global, or it will go wrong.
In my opinion it is strange if someone was unfit to fulfill the same request, about the same account, following the same guidelines, because the request was posted on a different location. I understand that the community has not yet expressed its wishes on these matters and that local bureaucrats have a responsibility to keep quality high. This is indeed a grey area at the moment, and clarity will be needed in the near future.
As an nlwiki bureaucrat, I care as much for the quality of names, as enwiki bureaucrats. In my opinion, an extra eye of someone who speaks English, German, Dutch and French is not a bad thing. Specially if you rename people from projects in those languages.
Although not a guideline, Wikipedia:Changing username/Assistance says that global renamers can rename on enwiki, and that non-global renamers/bureaucrats cannot. Also Legobot follows the directions from global renamers. With these considerations in mind, I chose to rename on enwiki, but ofcourse, this is a personal choice and I am fully responsible to keep to my limits. Sincerely, Taketa (talk) 17:52, 2 December 2014 (UTC)
Thanks Taketa for your input, it is certainly welcome. I've been meaning to try to "ungrey" the matter, it is just a matter of deciding how best to do that. There is a previous discussion I opened about possibly just moving all requests to meta (see BN archives), but not much traction was found. –xenotalk 21:49, 2 December 2014 (UTC)
Clerk note: A global standard is definitely the way to go. I personally would be happy for enwp's policy to be adopted globally. (Don't move CHU to meta, I wont have anything to do :P ) Mlpearc (open channel) 22:00, 2 December 2014 (UTC)
As a former clerk, I agree with the sentiment of keeping CHU here, however I think the easiest way to make that global standard is to move CHU to meta. Maybe you could even keep clerking there, Mlpearc! Either way, discussion needs to be had here and probably at meta before any decisions are made. demize (t · c) 22:58, 2 December 2014 (UTC)

I noticed that you removed the ASC notice from MediaWiki:Watchlist-details because it was "expired". However, the expiry date beside the notice said December 26. Is this a mistake? --Biblioworm 21:23, 4 December 2014 (UTC)

Not an error per se - I've commented at MediaWiki talk:Watchlist-details#Proposal to create new commission to choose administrators, please feel free to comment there. –xenotalk 23:10, 4 December 2014 (UTC)

I need urgent help!

Hi, I'm Anup. I had User:Anup on multiple projects and also the SUL. And, I've been globally renamed to 'User:Anup (usurp)'. If you remember me, you had renamed me from User:IndianWikipedian to User:Anup, this year in March. I had usurped User:Anup on multiple other projects since then. Recently, I noticed that User:Anup is not attached on Wiktionary, therefore I placed a request to usurp the unsued account User:Anup to add it to my central login. But beside renaming me from 'IndianWikipedian' to 'Anup' on Wiktionary, then renamed my User:Anup account globally on all projects to User:Anup (usurp). I find it very much frustrating, if I actually say my word then 'rubbish'. Are you able to help me here? I was using the account very recently a day ago, also had SUL.. not sure how do I qualify to be forcibly renamed. Thanks in advance! --Anup (usurp) (talk) 21:29, 5 December 2014 (UTC)

I will ask a Steward to help. –xenotalk 22:20, 5 December 2014 (UTC)
Sorry for the trouble. It is solved now. Crat on Wiktionary said that, there are some technical glitch and they are asking to programmers about this and I might have been lost my User:Anup account because they can't move back 'Anup (usurp)' to 'Anup'. I said okay, abandoned 'User:Anup (usurp)' account and created unregistered 'Anup' account, before someone else claim my desired username. It is okay now, I don't want a Wiktionary account anymore. Thank you for the assistance and sorry again for disturbance. Anupmehra -Let's talk! 22:34, 5 December 2014 (UTC)
You don't have to abandon your "user:Anup (usurp)" account, this process is quite simple for a Steward to correct. Bureaucrats no longer have the technical ability to fix this. –xenotalk 22:38, 5 December 2014 (UTC)
Anup is back on its place. The unattached Anup was moved to Anup (usurped2). There are some unattached accounts of Anup (usurped). Are any actions needed for these accounts? Cheers, —DerHexer (Talk) 22:59, 5 December 2014 (UTC)
I think all is well now, DerHexer. Thanks, –xenotalk 23:14, 5 December 2014 (UTC)

"Colloquialism"

"Wound up" is not a colloquialism. It is a legal term in Britain. If only I could invoke WP:ENGVAR, though I would not think of being that frivolous here. It is sad, however, to hear a bonafide legal phrase denounced as a colloquialism by someone in a position of power. RGloucester 02:36, 8 December 2014 (UTC)

Don't get wound up. Such terminology much cause confusion to other users. –xenotalk 02:47, 8 December 2014 (UTC)
If anything, I think the phrase "marked historical" would cause confusion, given that it isn't proper English. RGloucester 02:58, 8 December 2014 (UTC)
"closed"? –xenotalk 02:59, 8 December 2014 (UTC)
"Closed down" is certainly a viable alternative. RGloucester 04:47, 8 December 2014 (UTC)
Worksforme, and done. Thanks for educating me about "winding up" in the non-colloquial sense. –xenotalk 12:07, 8 December 2014 (UTC)

Log-in problem

Hi, I have an e-mail from a user who is having a persistent log-in problem. The error message refers to WMF sysops, so I'm thinking this is a bureaucrat/global renamer-level problem? Could you help, or point me to someone I should refer them to? I'm not sure who they've already tried - they've mentioned asking WMF in previous messages. Yngvadottir (talk) 20:05, 9 December 2014 (UTC)

@Yngvadottir: do you happen to have the exact text of the error message? Might help to figure out what the problem is. demize (t · c) 22:26, 9 December 2014 (UTC)
I do, but I'm reluctant to share it in case it reveals something about the account. If someone says they can help, I'll urge the user to e-mail them directly. Yngvadottir (talk) 23:21, 9 December 2014 (UTC)
I'd offer to take a look, but I'd probably know no better than you what information it might reveal. Maybe Xeno will be willing to talk to the user, I've known Xeno to be pretty nice. demize (t · c) 23:31, 9 December 2014 (UTC)
The message is probably referring to WMF sysadmins...enwiki sysops and bureaucrats have no special tools to help with login issues. Sorry. –xenotalk 00:01, 10 December 2014 (UTC)

usurp question

Do you know if I should make my rename/usurp request on the global level? Or should I deal with it locally? (Darkmaster2004, I asked the question on the 'crat's noticeboard) Melody Concertotalk 02:28, 16 December 2014 (UTC)

I went ahead and submitted a global rename request at metawiki as well: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Steward_requests/Username_changes#Requests Melody Concertotalk 03:09, 16 December 2014 (UTC)

My talk page

Hello Xeno, User:Sfarney is copying the discussion section Was Acts Authored by Luke from my talk page to Talk:Acts of the Apostles. I have told the user to start a new discussion without copying from my talk page, but the user decided to do it anyway again. I'm getting irritated by it. Please clarify this the the user not to do so. Cheers! — JudeccaXIII (talk) 21:19, 17 December 2014 (UTC)

Never-mind, The situation is getting resolved. I know though your an impressive admin., and I will still like to thank you anyway even if you didn't know what was going on. Cheers! — JudeccaXIII (talk) 23:08, 17 December 2014 (UTC)

I'm still around... I've been, um, semi-semi-active for a long while now, but starting to spend a little more time on WP... we will see if I get involved in any of the bureaucracy again anytime soon though... lol - Adolphus79 (talk) 17:08, 20 December 2014 (UTC)

User list of Pennsylvania categories

Hi, you archived Wikipedia:CATS/PENNSYLVANIA from User:Blargh29/Subcats of Category:Pennsylvania, but it seems to be obsolete. Can we agree to speedily delete it? – Fayenatic London 21:27, 29 December 2014 (UTC)

Sure, I've   Done that. Best, –xenotalk 00:32, 30 December 2014 (UTC)
