Michael Avery is the Ghost 1's science officer, having been with the project since its conception. A scientist through and through, Avery is all about the accumulation of knowledge to the point that Captain Walker even thinks he wouldn't care if the mission failed, so long as the information made it back. Despite this, he has a dry sense of humor that often serves to relieve the tension.

Ghosts of Yesterday
Avery was part of the team that developed the Ghost 1 project at the Sector Seven High Arctic Base and prepared for years to be part of the crew. By the time the ship reached orbit, he had already gathered enough new data to keep him busy for years. The ship deviated from its intended course, and Avery concluded that they'd entered a wormhole. The ship emerged in a distant star system, where they encountered the Autobots and Avery recognised them as similar technology to the Ice Man whom Sector Seven had back on Earth. When they listened in on the Autobots' electronic communications, Clarkson wondered what they were saying, and Avery accused him of anthropomorphizing.
After the ship landed on an alien world and the crew encountered Starscream, Avery defused tensions on board with the use of wry humor. They cooperated with Starscream in attacking Optimus Prime and Bumblebee, but Avery later backed up Walker's suspicions that something wasn't right. Indeed, when they tried to lose Starscream, they ended up crashing their ship into a cavern. As they were rescued from the native creatures by Optimus Prime, Avery wondered if he should try writing the whole venture up as a paper titled "Giant Sentient Mechanoid Battles Monster Worm on Alien Planet: A Scientific Abstract" but he wasn't sure if the usual scientific journals would take it.
They realized that returning to Earth through the still-open wormhole carried the risk of leading the Decepticons there, so Avery suggested they instead "kick some alien butt". As Walker considered whether they should stay or go, Avery pointed out that though the code directive suggested they should stay, Optimus had told them to stay out of the conflict, and anyway their ship was no match for proper Transformer technology. Walker decided to stay and fight, and Avery assisted Clarkson in working out how to maximize use of the ship's weapons systems. The information was put to good use in an attack against Starscream when the Decepticon was about to terminate Prime, but Starscream's next act was to destroy the Ghost 1 and everyone on board.
