Flow Chart For The Preparation of Salts

The document outlines a flow chart for preparing different types of salts. It describes that soluble salts can be prepared through acid-base reactions between acids and alkalis, metals, metal oxides, or metal carbonates. Insoluble salts are prepared through precipitation by mixing solutions containing the required cations and anions or by adding excess solid reactants to an acid with heating and cooling steps. The flow chart provides methods for preparing specified salts based on their solubility in water.

FLOW CHART FOR THE PREPARATION OF SALTS The flow chart below simplified the methods of preparation of salts.

This chart can help us to choose suitable methods to prepare a specified salt.

Is the salt soluble in water ?

Yes

Soluble salt can be preapred by : Acid + Alkali Salt + Water Acid + Metal Salt + Hydrogen Acid + metal Oxide Salt + Water Acid + metal carbonate Salt + Water + CO2

No

Soluble salts which are not salts of K+/Na+ /NH4+ are prepared by : Acid + Metal Salt + Hydrogen Acid + metal Oxide Salt + Water Acid + metal carbonate Salt + Water + CO2

Soluble salts of K+/Na+ /NH4+ are prepared by neutralisation. Acid + Alkali Salt + Water

Insoluble salts can be prepared by precipitation method through double decomposition reaction

Add acid to an alkali using titration method until the alkali is exactly neutralised with the help of an indicator Repeat the above mixing without indicator Heat the solution formed until it becomes saturated Allow it t crytallise by cooling

Add excess solid metal/ metal oxide/metal acrbonate into an acid with stirring Filter to remove excess solid Heat the filtrate until it becomes saturated Allow it t crytallise by cooling

Mix two solutions which contain the required cations and anions respectively to form a precipitate of the insoluble salt

Filter and wash the insoluble solid with a small amount of distilled water Press the solid between a few pieces of filter paper to be dried

Filter and wash the crystal with a small amount of distilled water Press the crystals between a few pieces of filter paper to be dried
