Lesson title: We always come back down... what is gravity?

KLA: Science Strand: Physical World Stage: 3 Year: 6 (10-12 years) Objectives: For students to begin to explore and understand the basic scientific processes related to gravity Timing: 60 mins

Outcome: SC4-10PW2: The action of forces that act at a distance may be observed and related to everyday situations. Indicators: Identify that the Earths gravity pulls objects towards the centre of the Earth. Resources: - Post-it notes - 10 x tennis balls (for throwing station) - 10 x small cardboard boxes (pushing of balancing beam station) - 1 x balance beam - bathroom steppers ( 1 per group of three- four students) - Interactive White Board (IWB) Key Scientific Knowledge: - Gravity is a force that attracts and pulls objects towards each other - The object with more mass has a bigger pull Because of the size of earth its gravity is so strong it pulls everything towards its centre (the centre of the earth) - Gravity causes a falling object to accelerate toward the ground -Gravity pulls in the same direction as the movement of a falling object - Acts on all objects equally (Morey-Holton, 2003; Layton, 2011) Integrated KLAs/ Skills: - ST3-4WS: Investigates by posing questions, including testable questions, making predictions and gathering data to draw evidencebased conclusions and develop explanations. ENGLISH EN3-1A: communicates effectively for a variety of audiences and purposes using increasingly challenging topics, ideas, issues and language forms and features

Lesson overview: Follow the leader obstacle course outside the classroom establish a few different station setups: Station 1. Get students to jump up as high as they can ... hopping to the next station..... Station 2. Get students to throw a ball as high as they can into the air and allow it fall instead of catching it ... hopping to the next station..... Station 3. Pushing a cardboard box off the edge of a balancing beam ... hopping to the next station..... Get students to visit each of the stations twice repeating the same actions. Gather students and ask them to reflect on a similar event that was taking place at each station... (Everything eventually moved downward). Reflecting on the discussion, find out what the students already know about gravity. Provision each of the students tables with post it notes encouraging them to write their responses on the notes for posting on the inquiry wall. Accept all initial responses as students will add, review and reconsider initial thoughts over the next few lessons. Allow students to watch the video What Is Gravity - http://www.ducksters.com/science/gravity.php as a way to introduce them to the factors of gravity. Feel The Force: Explain to the students that in order to feel the force they need to be concentrating on what they are doing. Divide students into groups of 3-4, and before starting the activity get the students to hypothesise what would be harder and take more effort to do - jumping down from a step or jumping up onto it and their reasoning behind why. In their groups, have each student jump off a bathroom stepper a few times and explain what they are feeling. Next have them alternate between jumping on and off the bathroom stepper - what is easier to do? Explain to students that when they jump down gravity is on their side helping to pull them down however when they jump up they are fighting against the force of gravity. Gravity working on earth: looking into gravities pull around the world How would we stand if we lived on the other side of the world ? How does gravity work their? How would things fall? Using the smart notebook file (Gravity working on earth), get the students to interact with the images of the people, objects and arrows moving them in relation to the earth and how gravity would be acting on the people and the way it would be pulling.

Get students to draw a visual representation of their understanding of gravitational forces and revisit the inquiry wall adding new concepts learnt within the lesson. Support and Extension: This lesson is very accessible for all learners as it is hands on, collaborative and experimental. All students should be able to achieve success as they are given the opportunity to communicate their own personal views on the factors of gravity. The teachers role during inquiry and experimentation based experiences is to be available to the students providing support or extending their thinking with open-ended questions where needed.
