Peppermint Water

Peppermint water is an aromatic water used as a flavored or perfumed vehicle. It is a clear saturated solution of peppermint oil in purified water. To prepare 10 mL of peppermint water, 0.02 g of talc and 0.15 g of peppermint oil are mixed and dissolved in 7 mL of purified water. The solution is then filtered and purified water is passed through to make the final volume of 10 mL. Peppermint water is packaged in amber bottles with black caps to protect it from light during storage.

Official definition: Peppermint water is a clear saturated solution of peppermint oil in purified water prepared by one of the processes described under aromatic waters

2.

Review of basic concepts: Name other examples of aromatic waters:

Strong Rose Water, USP Orange flower water Camphor water 3. Talc: (2 mL/ 1000 mL) (x g/ 10 mL)= 0.02 g Peppermint oil: (15 g/ 1000 mL) (x g/ 10 mL)= 0.15 g Determine the amount of ingredients needed to prepare 10 mL of Peppermint Water, NF:

4.

Give the use of each ingredient in the preparation:

Talc- breaks volatile substances into minute particles thereby exposed to solvent; it removes excess of the volatile substance and is insoluble in water, therefore easy to remove. It is also a dispersing agent. Peppermint oil- the gives flavor and taste Substitutes for talc- kielseghur, siliceous earth (clay), charcoal, chalk, magnesium carbonate

5.

What are the two methods of preparing aromatic waters:

Distillation- is the most ideal way for efficiency and quality of yield. It is slow and decomposition of essential oils and it may volatilize due to heat. Solution- more convenient in terms of time and equipment but the excess oils may be drawn off by water.

6. a.

Quality control parameters: Procedure:

Mix thoroughly 0.02 mL peppermint oil with 0.15 g talc. Add 7 mL purified water then shake for 10 minutes. Filter until it is clear and pass purified water through the filter to make 10 mL. b. Product:

Appearance- clear colorless solution Volume- 10 mL % Alcohol content- 0 % Pourability- easily pourable Physical stability- no floating impurities, no precipitation, no mold

7.

Packaging, labeling, and storage requirements:

Packaging: Packaging requirement- pack in tight containers Label- keep away from intense light Container- Amber narrow mouth bottle Cap- black with cap liner
