Section 4.8: Functions and Relations

This document defines and explains key concepts related to functions and relations. It defines a relation as a pairing of inputs and outputs, and notes that relations have domains (input values) and ranges (output values). It defines a function as a special type of relation where each input is paired with exactly one output. The document provides examples of determining if a relation is a function using an input-output table or graph. It also explains function notation, evaluating functions, and finding the slope of a linear function.

Functions and Relations
Definitions
 Relation
◦ pairing inputs with
outputs
◦ Any set of
ordered pairs

2
Domain Range
◦ input values of ◦ output values
a relation of a relation
◦ x values ◦ y values
◦ Independent ◦ Dependent
Variable Variable

3
Definitions
 Function
◦ A relation that has exactly one output for
each input
◦ Can’t get two different answers for same
input value

4
Determine if the relation is a function.
If it is a function, state the domain and
range.
Input Output Yes, this is a
function!!
-3 -2

5
Determine if the relation is a function.
If it is a function, state the domain and
range.
Input Output No, not a
-3 -1 function!!

6
Determining if a Relation is a Function
 For graphs
◦ Vertical line test
◦ If you can draw a vertical line through two
or more points, then it is NOT a function.

7
Determining if a Relation is a Function

Yes, this is a
function!
Determining if a Relation is a Function

No, not a
function!

9
Function Notation
 y and f(x) are interchangeable
 y = 5x – 8 and f(x) = 5x -8
mean the same thing
 f(x) tells you that it is a function
 Other letters can be used
◦ g, h, k, etc.

10
Evaluating a Function
 Evaluate the function when x = -5, 0, 5
f(x) = -3x + 4
Plug -5 in for x Plug 0 in for x Plug -5 in for x
f(-5) = -3(-5) + 4 f(0) = -3(0) + 4 f(5) = -3(5) + 4
f(-5) = 15 + 4 f(0) = 0 + 4 f(5) = -15 + 4
f(0) = 4 f(5) = -11
f(-5) = 19
Find the slope of the graph of
the linear function.
 f(2) = -2, f(0) = 5
