What is the difference between relation & a
function?
How do I determine the domain & range of
each?
I can statements:
● I can identify the difference between a
relation and a function.
● I can identify the domain and range of a
function.
Vocabulary
● Relation - describes the relationship between two
objects that are usually represented as an
ordered pair such as [(input, output), (x, y) or
(domain and range)], mapping or a graph.

● Ordered Pairs - a pair of two numbers (or

variables) written inside brackets and are
separated by a comma.

● Domain - is the set of all possible inputs of a

function. (Note: the x-values in the ordered pair.)

● Range - is the set of all possible outputs of a

function. (Note: the y-values in the ordered pair.)

● Function - relates each element of a set with

exactly one element of another set. (Note: x-
values do not repeat in a list)

● Vertical line test - a tool for determining whether

or not the graph of a relation represents a
function or not.

Essential Question:
What is function notation, and how do I evaluate and
write a function using this notation?
I can statements:
● I can evaluate a function in function written in
function notation.
Vocabulary
● Function rule - is the relationship between the
input or domain and the output or range.

● Function notation - refers to a way of writing a

function using the symbol "f(x)" where "f"
represents the function name and "x" represents
the input variable, essentially stating that "f" is a
function that takes "x" as input and produces an
output value; read as "f of x".

● Independent variable (input values) - is a

variable that does not depend on any other
variable for its value.

● Dependent variable (output values) - is the one

that depends on the value of some other number.

● Input - refers to the value or variable that is put

into a function to produce an output.

● Output - refers to the result or answer produced

by a function after performing operations on a
given input.

Essential Question:
How do we find the slope given two points & from a
graph? How do we write and graph equations in
slope-intercept form?
I can statements:
● I can find the slope given two points and from a
graph.
● I can write and graph equations in slope-intercept
form?
Vocabulary
● Slope of a line is a number that describes the direction of the line on a
plane.

● Linear equation is an equation in which the highest power of the variable is

always 1. It is also known as a one-degree equation.

● Linear Function is a function whose graph is a line. Thus, it is of the form

f(x) = ax + b where 'a' and 'b' are real numbers.

● Slope-Intercept Form an equation is y = mx + b where "m" represents the

slope and "b" represents the y-intercept.

● x-intercept is the point on a graph where a line or curve crosses the x-axis,
meaning the y-coordinate at that point is always zero; it essentially
represents the value of x where the graph intersects the horizontal axis.

● y-intercept is where the line of a graph crosses the y-axis, or what y is

equal to when x is equal to 0.

● x-axis is a horizontal number line and the y-axis is a vertical number line.
These two axes intersect perpendicularly to form the coordinate plane.

● y-axis to the vertical line on a coordinate plane, which is used to measure

the vertical position of a point on a graph, essentially acting like a vertical
ruler; it is perpendicular to the horizontal "x-axis" and is typically labeled
with values increasing upwards from the origin (0,0).

● Vertical refers to a line that runs straight up and down, parallel to the y-axis
on a coordinate plane, meaning it is perpendicular to a horizontal line and
has no defined slope; essentially, it goes from top to bottom or bottom to
top.

● Horizontal refers to a straight line that runs from left to right, parallel to the
x-axis, essentially meaning it goes across without going up or down; it is
considered parallel to the horizon, hence the name "horizontal" which
comes from the word "horizon".

● Slope formula a mathematical equation used to calculate the steepness of

a line between two points, defined as the "change in y-coordinates divided
by the change in x-coordinates,"
