Aims of a thriller
Thriller films revolve around the idea of anticipation and
suspense; it is supposed to promote these themes. The
protagonist is presented with problem typically an escape,
mission or mystery. No matter the sub genre it will
emphasise the danger the protagonist faces. The tension
builds up throughout the film and results in a climatic
ending often with a twist.
Sub genres
Mystery thriller
Psychological thriller
Thrillers can also be hybrids with other genres, e.g.
Action thriller Die Hard,
Horror thriller scream and
Disaster thriller - 2012
Generic conventions:
Dark colour scheme to connote mystery and suspense.
Props often associated with violence and terror e.g. a
knife.
Settings that often depict a normal everyday setting,
adding to the suspense due to unexpected action.
Plot twists to keep the audience entertained.
Protagonist vs. Antagonist
Themes of isolation to show protagonist is vulnerable
in comparison to the antagonist.
