Insulin NPH

1. Insulin (Humulin) is an antidiabetic hormone given subcutaneously to manage diabetes mellitus by lowering blood glucose levels. 2. It works by stimulating glucose uptake in muscle and fat and inhibiting hepatic glucose production. 3. Side effects include hypoglycemia, lipodystrophy, rashes, and decreases in serum phosphate, magnesium, and potassium levels. Nurses monitor for hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia and interactions with many other drugs can impact insulin requirements.
