The Organisation of The Islamic Cooperation (Oic) Department of Mechanical and Chemical Engineering
The document discusses different automotive transmission systems including front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive, and four-wheel drive. It provides details on the layouts and components of each system. For front-wheel drive, it describes the transverse engine placement and categories such as front-engine transversely mounted. Rear-wheel drive typically involves a front-engine and rear-wheel placement, with additional layouts like rear-engine and mid-engine. Four-wheel drive is also mentioned but no details are provided. The experiment requires students to study and compare these transmission systems through diagrams, component identification, and analysis of advantages and applications.

EXPERIMENT NO. 1 NAME OF THE EXPERIMENT: Study of Transmission System
Objective: The students will study the various transmission system employed in automotive vehicles. After this they will be able to identify the different components of transmission system and the different layouts of transmission system.
Requirements: 1. The students must make themselves familiar with all components and various layouts of transmission system. 2. They shall sketch the different lay-out of different transmission system and label all components, particularly front engine front wheel and front engine rear wheel drive. 3. The report should be submitted during the following lab-class. 4. The students are suggested to draw 2D figures. 5. The students should mention at least 3 advantages and disadvantages of each drive system. 6. Comparison among different drive systems are preferred. a. 4WD vs 2WD b. FWD vs RWD 7. Application/example of each drive system should be mentioned.
Front-wheel drive: Front-wheel drive (FWD) is a form of engine/transmission layout used in motor vehicles, where the engine drives the front wheels only. Most modern front-wheel-drive vehicles feature a transverse engine, rather than the conventional longitudinal engine arrangement generally found in rear-wheel- drive and four-wheel-drive vehicles. Most FWD layouts are front-engined. Rear-engined layouts are possible, but rare. Historically they fall into three categories: a. Front-engine transversely mounted/ Front-wheel drive
b. Front-engine longitudinally mounted/ Front-wheel drive
c. Front Mid-engine/ Front- wheel drive
Rear-wheel-drive: Rear-wheel drive (RWD) typically places the engine in the front of the vehicle and the driven wheels are located at the rear, a configuration known as front-engine, rear-wheel drive layout (FR layout). The front mid-engine, rear mid-engine and rear engine layouts are also used. This was the traditional automobile layout for most vehicles up until the 1970s and 1980s.Nearly all motorcycles and bicycles use rear-wheel drive as well, either by driveshaft, chain, or belt, since the front wheel is turned for steering, and it would be very difficult and cumbersome to "bend" the drive mechanism around the turn of the front wheel. A relatively rare exception is with the 'moving bottom bracket' type of recumbent bicycle, where the entire drivetrain, including pedals and chain, pivot with the steering front wheel. a. Front-engine, rear-wheel- drive
b. Rear-engine, rear-wheel- drive
c. Rear mid-engine longitudinally-mounted, rear-wheel-drive
d. Rear mid-engine transversely-mounted, rear-wheel-drive
