INTRODUCTION

DEFINITION OF TOOL

A tool has been defined as any


device that is capable of working a
material into a desired shape holding
it while it is being worked upon and
measuring it after the work has been
completed. The word tooling refers
to the hardware necessary to provide
a particular product.

Introduction To Tool

Engineering
The field of tool engineering takes participation
in the refinement of product design and the
design of machinery, machine tool gauges, dies,
fixture and special tool used in manufacturing.
It also consists of participation in
development, fabrication, maintenance, safety
and economic utilization of facilities to
produce maximum quality at minimum cost. It
involves problems dealing with the
manufacturing of products of metals and
plastics.
The field of tool and manufacturing
engineering encompasses a wide variety of
industries. It is concerned with the

manufacturing of airplanes, food handling


equipment, sports goods, automobile, missiles,
farm equipment, space capsules and so on and
so forth; it is a necessity in unit of high volume
production and in large or small enterprises.
The tool and manufacturing engineer
articulates in an environment, which requires a
thorough understanding of scientific and
engineering principal.

OIL SEALS

Whenever a shaft rotates, it needs a


bearing arrangement for smooth effective
operation. Wherever theres a bearing,
youll find a seal helping it to reach its
maximum service life and reliability. In
simplest term a shaft seal is a barrier.
This barrier has four functions:
Retain lubricants and/or liquids
Exclude dirt/contaminants
Separate fluids
Confine pressure

When a seal performs these functions


properly, it protects the bearing from
harmful contaminants while retaining a

clean lubricant supply, resulting in


lengthened bearing service life and
reliability. The bearings do their job better,
cleanliness of production and process
materials is maintained, lubricant is saved
and machinery downtime is reduced. An
integrated bearing/seal system approach is
the best way to achieve trouble-free
operation.

CONSTRUCTION OF OIL SEALS


Oil seal consists of a metal case on which
rubber is to be molded. Proper adhesive is

used on the case to give strength to the


metal-rubber bonding. Internal diameter of
oil seal is of rubber only and generally
loaded with a spring.
For production of oil seals following
equipments or materials are required:

A metal case of specific shape and size.


A rolled sheet of synthetic rubber.
An adhesive for metal-rubber bonding.
A hand or hydraulic press with heaters.
A die for giving required shape and size.
A lathe for cutting flash and finishing.
An air compressor for painting purpose.

Core : It is the male part of the die,


forms the internal shape of the
component.
Cavity : It is the female part of the die,
gives the component its external form.
Stripper : it is placed between core and
cavity. Ideally, component should
stuck in the stripper after opening of
die. From stripper component can be
ejected easily by applying some
pressure manually.
Material used for die manufacturing is hot
die steel.

Introduction

The die is to be designed for tractor water pump


seal has to be made from hot die steel. But here we
are making it using mild steel because it is not
meant for production.

Factors Affecting Seal Selection


Every seal application has a unique set of
characteristics that must be analyzed in order to
specify the exact style and type of seal.
Selecting the right seal depends on the basic
parameters of the application, including:
Shaft speed
Fluid compatibility
Primary seal function (retention or exclusion)
Operating pressure
Maximum temperature

Mild steel case with a synthetic KSR


rubber coating.

Tool Design:

After studying the component and taking note of


the nature of the various operations being
performed and the size of the seal, it is decided to
design a simple oil seal die.

Machine specification:
Machine used to operate this die is simple screw
type hand press with a provided set up for heating.
Heating can be either electric heating or produced
by burning of fuel.
