Light Reflection Numericals - Part 2

An object 2 cm high placed 8 cm from a concave mirror produces a virtual image 3 cm high. Using the mirror equation, the focal length is calculated to be -24 cm and the image position is 12 cm. A convex mirror with a 13 cm focal length forms an image of a light bulb 6 cm in diameter located 60 cm away. The image position is 10.7 cm behind the mirror and the diameter is 1.1 cm. To produce an image 3/4 the size of an object and located 24 cm behind a convex mirror, the required focal length is -96 cm.

LIGHT REFLECTION NUMERICALS WORKSHEET 2

1.

An object 2 cm high when placed in front of a converging mirror produces a

virtual image 3 cm high. If the object is placed at a distance of 8 cm from the
pole of the mirror, calculate: (i) the position of the image, (ii) the focal length
of the converging mirror. (Ans: concave mirror, v = 12 cm, f = -24 cm)

2.

A convex mirror has a focal length of 13.0 cm. A light bulb with a diameter of
6.0 cm is placed 60.0 cm from the mirror. What is the light bulbs image
position and diameter? (Ans: 10.7 cm, 1.1 cm)

3.

A convex mirror is needed to produce an image that is three-fourths the size

of an object and located 24 cm behind the mirror. What focal length should be
specified? (Ans: -96 cm)

4.

A 7.6 cm diameter ball is located 22.0 cm from a convex mirror with a radius
of curvature of 60.0 cm. What are the balls image position and diameter?
(Ans: -12.7 cm, 4.4 cm)

5.

A 1.8 m tall girl stands 2.4 m from a stores security mirror. Her image appears to be
0.36 m tall. What is the focal length of the mirror? (Ans: 0.60 m)

6.

An object is placed at a distance 10 cm from a convex mirror of focal length 15 cm.

What will be the nature the image? (Ans: a virtual and erect image, at a distance of
6cm from the optical center of the mirror on the right hand side of the mirror.)

7.

An object is placed at 20 cm in front of a convex mirror of focal length 10 cm. Find

the image distance and magnification. (Ans: image distance v=6.66 cm,
magnification = 0.33)

8.

A convex mirror is fitted on an automobile with focal length of 3 m. If a vehicle

following the automobile is at a distance of 5 m, determine the position and nature of
an image. (Ans: virtual, erect and diminished image at a distance of 1.875 m from the
mirror.)

9.

An object of height 6 cm is placed at a distance of 15 cm from a concave mirror of

focal length 10 cm. Find position, nature and height of the image. (Ans: v=-30 cm,
height = 12 cm, real, inverted and magnified).

10.

An object of height 5 cm is placed at a distance of 10 cm from convex mirror of focal

length 15 cm. Find the position, nature and size of an image. (Ans: Virtual, erect, and
diminished, at a distance of 6 cm behind the mirror, height of image = 6 cm

11.

A convex mirror is used as a safety mirror in a shop. It has a focal length of 15 m. A

person is standing 12 m away from this mirror. Find the position of his image. (Ans:
v=6.667 m, image behind the mirror).

12.

An object of height 6 cm is placed 18 cm away from a concave mirror. The image is

formed 12 cm before the mirror. Find out the following: (i) Focal length of the mirror
(f) (ii) Radius of curvature (R) (iii) Image height (h) (iv) Magnification of the mirror
(m). (Ans: height of image = 4 cm (real and inverted), R = 14.4 cm, m = -0.67)

13.

A convex mirror used for rear view on an automobile has a radius of curvature 3.00
m. If a bus is located at 5 m from the mirror, find position, nature and relative size of
the image. (Ans: f=1.5 m, v=1.15 m, m=0.23, virtual erect and smaller in size by a
factor of 0.23)
