A NOTE FROM DIRECTOR

BRAD BIRD

MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE - GHOST PROTOCOL may not have been Tom Cruises or J.J. Abrams first MISSION, but
it was mine. In fact, it was the first live-action film Id ever had the opportunity to direct and it was a doozy.
For me, everything about this latest MISSION its huge scope, its crushingly tight schedule, its complex
set-pieces, its ever-morphing script was challenging, even scary.
But two things comforted me going in; the incredibly high caliber of our cast and crew, and knowing that a
familiar face and talent was waiting for me at the end of the process both belonging to Michael Giacchino.
Michael had written the wonderful scores for my previous two films THE INCREDIBLES and RATATOUILLE,
as well as the previous MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE that J.J. directed.
So I took a deep, cleansing breath and dove in with the knowledge that whatever problems we encountered,
the film was sure to sound great.
After shooting in 6 countries on 4 continents, though hot weather and cold, I am happy to report that we have
made the kind of popcorn-crunching film Id hoped we would, and Michael's music has only made it better.
It is a globe-trotting score, swinging wildly from feeling to feeling, from chilly suspense to brawny adrenaline
to borderline giddiness all with a musicality that is rare among contemporary film scores.
One of the things that drew me to the project was Toms insistence that each of the MISSION films reflect
the style of its director, and one of the first things that J.J. (who produced our film with Tom and Bryan Burk)
asked me when I came aboard was are there any things that youve always wanted in a spy movie?
It is the sort of question that every filmmaker wants to be asked, and I answered with an assortment of
ideas that found their way into the finished film. But having listened to it several times now, I realize there
is one more thing Ive always wanted in a spy movie
a score like this.
