Aterials: Various Fruits and Vegetables Multimeter (Digital or Analog)
Aterials: Various Fruits and Vegetables Multimeter (Digital or Analog)
PROCEDURE
PURPOSE
The purpose for this experiment is to find out what fruits and vegetables have
the most and least amount of electric charge. The reason for this experiment
could be to see if produce can be a renewable energy resource, because
there is a high demand for renewable energy. Another reason is to see if
produce can produce a charge at all.
QUESTION
What amount of charge will various fruits and vegetables have? Will this
charge be enough to power a light bulb? Can produce be a renewable energy
resource?
HYPOTHESIS
My hypothesis is that the potato will have the greatest charge and the
avocado the least charge. I think this because salty water conducts
electricity, and potatos have a lot of salty water, and avocados very little of.
Since avocados are more of a solid, acidic fruit, I dont think that it will
produce much of a charge. I also think that the power given off by the
produce will be enough to power a light bulb, which could allow produce to be
a reliable renewable energy source.
RESULTS
AND
CONCLUSION
My hypothesis that the potato would have the greatest charge was correct.
During the experiment, I also figured out that acidic fruits and vegetables
seem to have a stronger current flow. However, I found out that the avocado
actually had the 2nd greatest (Ohms) charge, not the lowest. Another thing I
found out is that no piece of produce, even the potato, is even near enough
to power a light bulb. This disproves that produce can be used as a
renewable resource, since the charge given off is so small. Also, I found out
that for (Ohms), the amount kept changing, so the levels I recorded arent
exactly accurate, but are close enough. I also found out that even though the
potato had the most (Ohms), it had the least amount of A (Microamps).
This could be because potatoes are very low in acid, and acid is what is in
batteries and other power sources, which is measured in Microamps and
Volts. Another thing I found while doing the experiment was that even though
oranges are very acidic, they didnt seem to be very high on the scale, even
though lemons is near the top of the scale. Even though theyre nearly the
same on the inside, the orange seems to be so much lower. This could be
because the orange is bigger then the lemon, and the charge take longer to
go through it. If I could redo this experiment, I would make a predefined
length so the distances inside the fruits are the same, making no variables
change.
