Lemon Vs Potato Experiment

The experiment compares the energy output of lemons and potatoes as batteries, concluding that lemons produce more consistent voltage and can power more LED lights than potatoes. The project highlights the role of acidity in lemons for energy transfer and notes issues with voltage stability in potato batteries. Overall, it encourages experimentation with different variables to further explore the topic of electricity.

Lemon vs potato experiment

Which one has more energy:potatoes or lemons?

I think lemons have more volts than potatoes and

will be a better battery.

Safety glasses
2 egg cartons
6 potatoes
6 lemons
12 zinc electrodes
12 copper electrodes
3 LED lights
6 alligator clips
10 4in. Pieces of copper wire with the ends stripped
Voltage meter
First get your materials.Place the 6 lemons in one
egg carton and the 6 potatoes in the other egg
carton.Place a zinc electrode and copper electrode
in each lemon and potato.Be sure the copper and
zinc don’t touch each other.hook your copper wire
from copper to zinc and repeat on all electrodes
except for the last two electrodes which are your
terminals. The copper is your positive terminal and
the zinc is your negative terminal.

See picture 1 the first lemon battery had a looser

connection and so the voltage went up and down on
the meter from .25v to 5v.

See picture 2 the second one had tighter

connections so then the voltage was steady.

See picture 3 the potato battery had issues with

storing electricity because at first the voltage was
4.86 and then fell to zero. I had some trouble getting
readings on the meter from the potato battery.
I noticed that there is some resistance in the circuit
due to the copper wire. All of the lemons voltage
added up to 5.76v but when connected together with
wires the voltage was 5.35.

The potato battery has a surge of voltage but then

drops to near zero volts why?Dryer inside? The
lemon battery has a more consistent voltage why?
Wetter inside? My project has shown mysteries of
electricity.

I noticed that over time the electrodes got looser in

the potatoes and lemons which causes the voltage
to go up and down rapidly and you have to put the
copper and zinc electrodes deeper into the potato or
lemon.

I was able to get 3 lights to work with the lemon

battery and 1 for a short amount of time with the
potato battery.
In conclusion,I learn that lemons have more energy
than potatoes.I found out that potatoes don’t store
electricity like lemons do.I learned that if something
doesn’t work you try something different to see if you
can get it to work.I also learned that the acidity in the
lemon juice inside the lemons helps the electrons to
travel from the zinc electrodes to the copper ones.

Potatoes taste good but don’t make a good

battery.Lemons have a sour taste but make a better
battery.

I hope you enjoyed my science fair project and I

really encourage you to do this project and change
different variables and see what is the same and
what is different about it.

Science experiments can create more questions

than answers.
LED lights are optional but here's how to wire them
up.First get 6 alligator clips, put one on each end of
the wire, repeat this 3 times.Next clip them to your
terminals. Finally if you did this right the lights will
turn on.

In this paragraph I’m to have early drafts of my

writing.First is a draft of my conclusion. In conclusion
lemons have more energy than potatoes and I
learned from this science project that potatoes don’t
store energy unlike lemons which do store energy
and I learned a bunch of other things like there's
some resistance some circuits.I hope you enjoyed
my science fair project and I really encourage you to
do this project and change different variables about
it and see what's the same and what’s different
about it.
