Soln KG Inert KG 5 - 1: Sample Problem #1

A slurry containing 100 kg of inert solids, soybean flakes, and hexane solution is contacted with 100 kg of pure hexane. This produces an underflow of 125 kg containing 75 kg of inerts at a concentration of 1.5 kg/kg solution. The overflow contains 75 kg. The underflow contains 0.008 kg oil/kg solution and the overflow contains 0.02 kg oil/kg solution.

Sample Problem #1:

A slurry of flaked soybeans weighing a total of 100 kg contains 75 kg of inert solids and 25 kg
of solution with 10 wt % oil and 90 wt % of solvent hexane. This slurry is contacted with 100 kg
of pure hexane in a single stage so that the value of the concentration of inert in the solution
for the outlet underflow is 1.5 kg insoluble solid/kg solution retained. Calculate the amounts
and compositions of the overflow and the underflow leaving the stage.

Solution:

100 kg
V0 V1
SLE
L0 L
1.51 kg inert
100 kg
75 kg inert kg soln
10% oil
25 kg soln 90% hexane

Solution (contd):

 in L1:
1
solution retained   75  50 kg
1 .5
 L1 = 75 + 50 = 125 kg

 total balance:
L 0  V0  L1  V1
100  100  125  V1
 V1 = 75 kg

 equilibrium condition:
x 125 
y A 1  A1 eq(1)
50

 oil bal:
oil in L0 = x A1 L1 + y A1 V1
0.1 25   x A1 125   y A1  75  eq(2)

 solving eqs 1 and 2:

x A 1 = 0.008
y A1 = 0.02
