CHAPTER 1
1.1 INTRODUCTION
Memon College first opened its doors in the year 1999 as a college providing accounting and
basic IT related courses. Over the years, it has diversified into business and early childhood
development education programs. It operates under the umbrella of the nasserpuna memon
community.
For more than a decade, Memon College has held high standards in tertiary academics. At the
core of their wide ranging academic inquiry is the commitment to attract and engage the best
minds in pursuit if greater human understanding, pioneering new discoveries and services to
society.

To provide quality, affordable, accessible and relevant tertiary level education, delivered by
dedicated professional terms, with values of heritage, excellence and teamwork.
1.1.2 Vision of Memon College.
To provide innovative educational environment far lifelong learning programs that enable
individuals communities and region to prosper.
1.1.3 Goal
To strengthen and improve Memon College in its ability to provide quality education to the
community.
The industrial attachment training is an essential component of the curriculum of Jomo Kenyatta
University of Agricultural and Technology (JKUAT), faculty of Human Resource Development,
Mombasa Campus. The Msc HRM programme will not be completed without the industrial
attachment. The attachment period is usually a maximum of eight weeks, during which students
are expected to acquire additional practical experience to supplement their course study in the
university. They are also exposed to the real world of work and its challenges which will prepare
them towards their future careers.
This report is the outcome of eight weeks practical training I had at Memon College in the
Mombasa region. It is said to be asupervised programme since lecturers from the faculty visit the
students during this period and at the end of the programme to ascertain the success of the
programme and the amount of seriousness students attached to it.
1.2 Objectives of the industrial attachment
Some of the important objectives of the industrial attachment are as follows;
To access the interest of the student in the occupation he/she plans to undertake.
To provide the students with an opportunity to apply the students with an opportunity to
apply knowledge in real work situation.
To expose the students to the work methods not taught in the university and to provide
access to products, equipment not normally available in the university environment.
To make the transition from school to the world of work smoothly & to enhance contacts
for job placement.
To enhance industrys satisfaction with graduate of the faculty in particular and the
university at large.

3.1 Activities Performed
Most of the attachment experience was gained in the administration department where majority
of the human resource issues are handled.
3.1.1 Activities performed at the registrars office
The registrars office is the main office of the student records where analyses of the students
records are performed. Students come with their banking ships which are then filed. Lectures
particulars are also file here including lave applications and claim form filling.
3.1.2 Activities performed at the marketing department.
Assisted in the development of the marketing objectives and also the preparation of the
promotional material. Also went to field marketing where I visited several high schools for
marketing purposes.
3.1.3 Activities performed at the administration office.
The administration office can be seen as the hb of the college where most of the colleges
activities are controlled from I undertook a number of activities here including;
Maintenance of the staff register book where all the staff would sign in and sign out at the
respective times within the institution.
Preparations of staff pay since they are paid on an hourly basis thus calculations have to
be done upon the staff filling a claim form.
Organizing for the staff training programmes, notably the train the trainers programme in
conjunction with ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants).
Conducting staff evaluation after every week which includes sourcing for stdent feedback
and monitoring the staff register book.
Learnt how to process payments with the deductions including pay as you earn (PAYE),
NSSF, NHIF and loans.
