Whites Model Handouts

White's model of communication outlines an 8-stage process of communication that begins with a speaker thinking of an idea and ends with the speaker monitoring the listener's feedback. The 8 stages are: 1) thinking, 2) symbolizing, 3) expressing, 4) transmitting, 5) receiving, 6) decoding, 7) feedback, and 8) monitoring. The speaker originates the communication and the listener receives and responds to the message without initiating communication themselves. Together, the interacting patterns of stimulus and response between the speaker and listener comprise the complete act of communication according to White's model.
