Sop HT SWGR Meggering

1. The purpose is to measure the insulation resistance and polarization index of the transformer to evaluate its health and condition. 2. Personal protective equipment must be worn and a safe work permit obtained before beginning work. The area must be cleared and marked as restricted. 3. The procedure involves isolating and discharging the transformer, performing functional checks of the megger, measuring the insulation resistance between phases, evaluating the polarization index, inspecting the transformer, and returning it to service by closing breakers in reverse order.

Standard Procedure for Meggering of HT Transformer

1.0 Purpose
Purpose is to measure the Insulation resistance & Polarisation Index of
Transformer and to ascertain the health and condition of transformer.

HT

2.0 Maintenance documentation

The manufacturer's manuals are to be current, available on the platform and reviewed
by all persons who will carry out meggering of the equipment.
3.0 Safety Considerations
Evaluate the weather conditions while working in offshore.

Personal safety equipment is mandatory.

Prior to starting any meggering work carry out pre-job planning and risk
assessment.

Obtain safe work and isolation permit before carrying out the job.

Ensure personnel performing the meggering are authorized to do the job & are
familiar with the manufacturer's operation and maintenance manual before
beginning the maintenance.

Clear and close off working area. During work ensure restricted area is identified
with warning signs and tape.

4.0 Procedure for meggering of HT Transformer

Isolate the transformer by switching off LT ACB by standard procedure.
Verify that the other transformer/s are taking the additional load successfully.
Switch off the HT VCB, remove its control plug & rack out the VCB.
Open the HT terminal cover of transformer.
Discharge any accumulated static charges by an earthing rod in all three phases.
Carry out functional check of megger as under

Ensure the Megger is charged enough to carry out the job.

Operate the HT megger at stipulated voltage with both the probes open. The
reading should be infinity.

Operate the megger with both the leads shorted. The reading should be zero
(short)

Connect one lead to an earth point and other to another point on the frame. The
reading should be zero (short)

Check the transformer HT winding resistance between all three phases using a
multimeter. Connect earth lead of the Megger to earth and the line lead to one
phase of the transformer. Switch on the Megger. Set the Megger at appropriate
voltage. Megger the transformer HT windings and record the 1 minute & 10 minute
Insulation Resistance values. Evaluate the PI value by dividing the 10 minute value
by the 1 minute value. Check whether it is within permissible limits, if not, take
necessary action.
Inspect the exterior of the transformer including cables for damage; inspect
terminals for tightness as well.
Grounding cable: Ensure the grounding cable is bolted securely to the base
equipment mounting surface.
Ensure that no tools are left inside the terminal box. Close the terminal cover.
Rack in the HT VCB, Insert the control plug. Close the HT VCB.
Load the transformer by closing the LT ACB as per standard procedure.
Record the IR & PI values in the register.
