Guided Notes On Severe Weather

The document discusses different types of storms and weather phenomena. It explains that thunderstorms require moisture, lifting of air masses, and atmospheric instability. Tropical cyclones form from warm ocean waters and rotate due to converging winds. They are classified based on wind speed and damage potential. Tornadoes are rotating columns of air that touch the ground, and are rated based on their strength and path of destruction. The document provides an overview of the conditions and processes required for different storm systems to form and intensify.

1. What are the 3 conditions needed for thunderstorms?

There must be an abundant source of moisture in the lower levels of the

atmosphere
Some mechanism must lift air so that the moisture can condense and release latent
heat.
The portion of the atmosphere through which the cloud grows must be unstable
2. What are 3 steps in the lifecycle of a thunderstorm?
Cumulus stage, Mature stage, and dissipation stage
3. What is a tornado and how are they classified?
A tornado is a violent whirling column of air in contact with the ground.
Fujita tornado intensity scale classifies tornadoes according to their path of
destruction, wind, speed, and duration.
4. How do tropical cyclones (hurricanes) form?
The stored energy from water that has evaporated from the ocean is released when
the air beings to rise and water vapor condenses creating an area of low pressure
and the rotation of the hurricane begins as warm air moves toward the low
pressure center to replace the air that has risen.
5. What are the stages of a tropical cyclones?
They usually begin as disturbances that originate either from the ITCZ or as weak
low-pressure system called tropical waves. Only a small percentage of these form
into tropical cyclones because conditions throughout the atmosphere must allow
rising air to be dispersed into the upper atmosphere
6. How are tropical cyclones classified?
The Saffir-Simpson hurricane scale classifies hurricanes according to wind speed,
air pressure in the center, and potential for property damage.
7. What are the hurricane hazards?
Strong winds, Storm surges, and The strength of the storm
