Examination Control Division: Subject: - Irrigation and Drainage Engineering

This document appears to be an exam for a course on Irrigation and Drainage Engineering. It contains 9 questions covering various topics related to irrigation systems. Some of the questions ask students to calculate operational water requirements, design canal alignments, analyze canal lining needs, check profiles against piping and uplift, design vertical drops, siphons, and drainage channels. The exam aims to test students' understanding of key concepts and their ability to apply engineering principles to design irrigation and drainage infrastructure.

Subject: - Irrigation and Drainage Engineering (CE654)

Candidates are required to give their answers in their own words as far as practicable.
Attempt All questions.
The figures in the margin indicate Full Marks.
Assume suitable data if necessary.

1. What is Irrigation and what is its importance in Nepal?

2. A field channel has culturable command area of 2000 ha. The intensity of irrigation for
gram is 30% and that for wheat is 50%. Gram has a kor period of 18 days and kor depth
of 12 cm, while wheat has kor period of 15 days and kor depth of 15 cm. calculate the
discharge of the field channel. Explain what do you understand by operational water
requirements.
3. Write a brief note on the planning of canal alignments.
4. a) The banks of an irrigation channel conveying a flow of 12.0 m 3/s are well
protected with a masonry structure with side slope as 0.5:1 (H:V). The canal has to
pass through the medium having mean particles as 4 cm. If the bed slope of the canal
is 1:2000, find the stable bed width. Draw the sketch of the designed section. Assume
that the roughness is same along the whole perimeter of the section.
b) A canal conveying 32 m3/s with earthen canal irrigates 32,000 ha during wet months.
Due to the unlined section 25% of the flow is lost during dry months. If the canal can
be lined, additional 5000 ha can be irrigates. Based on the following data, justify the
necessity of lining by carrying out brief financial analysis. Assume i = 10% and
T = 40 years.
5. Using Khoslas method, check the safety of the weir profile, shown below, against piping
and uplift (at point A). Safe exit gradient may be assumed as 1 in 5.

6. What is a spur? How do you fix the spacing of spur in a bend? Draw neat sketches of plan
and section of a typical gabion spur.
[1+2+5]
7. a) Design a vertical drop for the data given below:
Full supply discharge u/s and d/s = 1.5 m3/s
Drop height = 1.0 m
FSL u/s and d/s = 106.0 m and 105.0 m respectively
Full supply depth u/s and d/s = 0.80 m
Bed level of u/s and d/s =105.2 and 104.2 respectively
Bed width u/s and d/s = 1.10 m
Top width of crest = 0.50 m

b) With definition sketch, write the procedure to fix design parameters of a Non-modular
outlet.

8. Design a siphon aqueduct across a stream for the following data:

Canal
Full supply discharge = 56 m3/s
Bed width = 32 m
Depth of flow = 2.0 m
Bed level = 267.0 m
Stream
High frod dischagre = 425 m3/s
High flood level = 268.20 m
Bed level = 265.50 m
General ground level = 267.20 m
Make suitable assumption, if required. Draw plan and sectional elevation of the
designed siphon aqueduct.
[5+2+3]
9. Determine the discharge of a drainage channel in l/s/ha designed to meet following
condition for the growth of rice paddies in bunded field in plains of Nepal.
Initial water level in field = 30 mm
Maximum water level is 250 mm which may persist for up to one day
Depth in excess of 200 mm may persist for up to 2 days
No rain follows the design rainfall for several days
Design 3 days rainfall is 300 mm
