Cartesian Coordinate System: Marijoy C. Atole

The document discusses the Cartesian coordinate system used in AutoCAD. It describes how the x and y axes are divided into numbered segments with positive and negative values. Points can be specified using absolute coordinates by entering x and y values, relative coordinates by entering offsets from the last point, polar coordinates by entering a distance and angle, direct distance entry by moving the cursor and entering a distance, or polar tracking by moving the cursor along a path. Examples of each method are provided.

CARTESIAN COORDINATE SYSTEM

AutoCAD provides the user

with an infinite two
dimensional area to work
with. Any entities place on
the working two dimensional
plane can be defined
relative to the Cartesian
coordinate system.

Each of these axis is further divided into segments. Each

segment is given a value. The X axis segments increase in
value to the right. The positive X values are to the right of the
intersection of the two axis. The negative X values are to the
left. The positive Y values are above the intersection and
increase up. The negative Y values are below.

1.

Absolute Coordinates

2. Relative Coordinates

- Specifies a point by entering

its X and Y values in the
format X,Y.

-specify a point relative to the X&Y

distance from the last point n the
format @X,Y where @ is a relative
last point

pointing device to the direction of
the point and entering a distance.
