Performance Task G8

The document provides information about a performance task for 8th grade students involving surface area and volume. Specifically, it describes two problems for students to solve. The first problem involves finding the surface area of a jewelry box given its dimensions. The second problem involves finding the surface area and perimeter of a square prism given its volume formula. Students are expected to show their work and explain their steps. They will be evaluated on developing autonomy in solving problems, the appropriateness of their solution process, and the accuracy of their conclusions.

Performance Task

First Grading Period

Date: Aug. 11, 2016 Grade Level: Grade 8 Special Class
Approved by: __________________________ Teacher: Judah P. Lazaga

Content Standard: The learner demonstrates understanding of key concepts of factors of polynomials, rational
algebraic expressions, linear equations and inequalities in two variables, systems of linear
equations and inequalities in two variables and linear functions.

Performance Standard: The learner is able to formulate real-life problems involving factors of polynomials,
rational algebraic expressions, linear equations and inequalities in two variables, systems of
linear equations and inequalities in two variables and linear functions, and solve these
problems accurately using a variety of strategies.

Title: Solid Talking

Background of the Task: One of the applications of algebra is on geometry. The formula in finding the perimeter,
area, volume and surface area of figures always involves variables or unknown values.
In this task, you will be dealing with surface area and volume with the application of
special products and factoring.
Task: You will be a product designer. You will be designing a boxes with certain sizes. You will be presenting it to
your client the jeweler for them to use as jewelry box with particular dimensions.

Audience: Jeweler

Purpose: You will use your understanding on multiplication of polynomials, special products and factoring in
solving problems.

Procedure:
Performance Task 1
Solve. Show all of your work and explain your steps.
You are painting the outside of a jewelry box,
including the bottom. To find the surface area (S.A.)
of the jewelry box, you can use the formula
SA 2lw 2lh 2wh where l is the length, w is the
width, and is the height. What is the surface area of
the jewelry box in terms of x?
Performance Task 2
Solve. Show all your work and explain your steps.
The volume of a square prism is 144 x3 216 x 2 81x .

a. What is an expression that could describe the

perimeter of one of the prisms square faces?

b. What is the surface area of the prism?
