06 StoichWord Problems (No Equations) 2014

This document provides 7 stoichiometry word problems involving various chemical reactions. The problems require calculating masses of reactants and products using mole-mass conversions and balanced chemical equations. Showing work and units is important. Answers are provided and rounded appropriately. Reactions include iron and sulfur reacting to form iron (III) sulfide, zinc reacting with sulfuric acid to produce hydrogen gas, and the decomposition of copper (II) oxide into copper and oxygen.

Stoichiometry Word Problems

Complete the following problems using dimensional analysis. Show your work
and all units for each problem. Round off your answer to the correct
number of significant figures.

1. In the reaction between iron and sulfur, what weight of iron is needed to react completely with 32.0
g of sulfur to produce iron (III) sulfide?

2. When zinc reacts with sulfuric acid, what weight of hydrogen is produced from 31.8 g of zinc?

3. Silver bromide can be precipitated by the reaction of silver nitrate with sodium bromide.
What mass of precipitate can be produced starting with 34.3 g of sodium bromide?

4. Hydrochloric acid is added to 50.0 g of iron(II) sulfide, and it reacts. Hydrogen sulfide is
produced. What is the mass of the hydrochloric acid that is needed?

5. How many grams of nitric acid are needed to react completely with 25.0 grams of magnesium?
6. How many grams of oxygen are produced by the decomposition of 128 grams of potassium
chlorate?

7. Copper(II) oxide decomposes to form solid copper and oxygen gas. If 95.4 g of copper (II) oxide
decomposes, (a) how many grams of copper and, (b) how many grams of oxygen are formed?

8. How much aluminum oxide can be formed when 5.786 g of oxygen combines with aluminum?
1. 2 Fe + 3 S Fe2S3
32.0 g S 1 mol S 2 mol Fe 55.85 g Fe = 37.2 g Fe
32.07 g S 3 mol S 1 mol Fe
2. 0.983 g

3. NaBr + AgNO3 NaNO3 + AgBr

34.3 g NaBr 1 mol NaBr 1 mol AgBr 187.78 g AgBr = 62.6 g AgBr
102.90 g NaBr 1 mol NaBr 1 mol AgBr

4. 41.5 g HCl

5. Mg + 2 HNO3 Mg(NO3)2 + H2
25.0 g Mg 1 mol Mg 2 mol HNO3 63.02 g HNO3 = 1.30 x 102 g HNO
24.31 g Mg 1 mol Mg 1 mol HNO3

6. 50.1 g O2

7a. 2 CuO 2 Cu + O2
95.4 g CuO 1 mol CuO 2 mol Cu 63.55 g Cu = 76.2 g Cu
79.55 g CuO 2 mol CuO 1 mol Cu

7b. 2 CuO 2 Cu + O2
95.4 g CuO 1 mol CuO 1 mol O2 32.00 g O2 = 19.2 g O2
79.55 g CuO 2 mol CuO1 mol O2

8. 12.29 g Al2O3
9. 2 H2O (g) 2 H2 (g) + O2 (g)

75.0 g H2O1 mol H2O 1 mol O2 22.4 L O2 = 46.6 L O2

18.02 g H2O2 mol H2O 1 mol O2
2.
2. Zn + H2SO4 ZnSO4 + H2
31.8 g Zn 1 mol Zn 1 mol H2 2.02 g H2 = 0.983 g H2
65.38 g Zn 1 mol Zn 1 mol H2

4.
2HCl + FeS H2S + FeCl2
50.0 g FeS 1 mol FeS 2 mol H2S 36.46 g HCl = 41.5 g HCl
87.92 g FeS 1 mol FeS 1 mol H2S

6.
2KClO3 2KCl + 3O2
128 g KClO3 1 mol KClO3 3 mol O2 32.00 g O2 = 50.1 g O2
122.55 g KClO3 2 mol KClO3 1 mol O2
8.

3O2 + 4Al 2Al2O3

5.786 g O2 x 1 mol O2 x 2 mol Al2O3 x 101.96 g Al2O3 = 12.29 g Al2O3
