2) Look at the examples and complete the spelling rules for the
gerund.
1. Examples: sing - singing, eat - eating, play playing, go - going, tidy - tidying
Most verbs do not undergo spelling changes, and you only have to add to the base form.
2. Examples: come - coming, write - writing, live - living
In those verbs ending in 1 vowel + 1 consonant + E you delete the E and then add .
3. Examples: swim swimming, sit sitting, forget -forgetting; open opening, mix - mixing
In those verbs ending in 1 consonant + 1 stressed vowel + 1 consonant, you
the last consonant and then add , except when the verb ends in w, x or y.
4. Example: travel - travelling
In those verbs ending in L, you always double the L and then add .
5. Examples: die - dying
When a verb ends in IE, you change the IE for a and then add .
6. Example: picnic picnicking
When a verb ends in C, you add a and then .

TEACHER NOTES:

Students have to fill in the gaps to complete the conjugation of the verb to study in the
Present Continuous.

Then, looking at some examples, they have to complete the spelling rules for the -ing form.
These rules are in Catalan.

For EFL students with a low level of language competence, it's a good idea to translate the
spelling rules.
