MATH QUIZ- GRADE 9

1. The radius (r) of a circle with area (A) is given by the formula

Find the area of a circle of radius 5 centimeters.

Solution:

5=

2

(5)2 = ( )

25 =

= 25 2
2. A flare is launched from a life raft with an initial velocity of 80 meters per second. How many
seconds will it take for the flare to return to the sea?

Solution :

If an object is launched into the air, the height above the ground after t seconds is given by the formula

= 16 2
The variable h represents the height of the flare when it returns to the sea, thus = 0

The variable v represents the initial velocity of the flare, thus

= 80
Substituting the given data in the formula,

= 16 2

0 = 80 16 2
0 = 16(5 )
Solving for t,
(16 = 0)|(5 = 0)
( = 0)|( = 5)
The flare returns to the sea in 5 seconds.

3. Find the number of days 10 workers can complete a job if 5 workers can complete the same job
in 7 days.

Solution: The number of days a certain job (y) can be completed varies inversely as the
number of workers (x) assigned to do the job.

Assuming that each work at the same rate, then = = .
Using = 1 1 = 7(5)
= 35
35
2 = = 3.5

4. If a map is drawn to the scale 1 190 and the distance between towns A and B
measures 6 cm on the map, what is the approximate distance between the two towns?

190
Solution: 6
= 1
= 190(6)
= 1140
5. The square root of 1 more than twice a certain number is 5 . Find the number.
Solution:

2
(2 + 1) = 52
2 + 1 = 25
2 = 24
= 12
6. A baseball diamond is a square 25 metres on a side. How far is it from the home plate to the
second base?

Solution:

2 = (25)2 + (25)2
= 625 + 625
= 1250
= 35.35
