Engineering Surveying Field Scheme Report
Engineering Surveying Field Scheme Report
Background
This report focuses on all aspects of surveying practical field work carried out in
Bournemouth during the dates of 1st to 5th November 2010. During the five days
different tasks were allocated and practicals were carried out while noting the results
and calculating relevant figures to check the accuracy and correctness of the tasks.
Objectives
Scenario
A developer wants to build a new leisure complex overlooking the sea on the area
currently grassed at the top of West Cliff, and requires details of the existing features
in order to determine the how much material would need to be removed in order to
achieve a flat base.
The development will also extend onto the beach, where the developer would like to
build luxury beach houses for the clients and needs some idea of how much space
they would take up.
To avoid tidal drift of the sand, there is also the requirement to construct new
breakwaters on the beach at a constant interval between the existing breakwaters, to
protect the new beach houses.
To determine the requirements for the scheme, there are FOUR tasks that need to
be completed, as follows:
TASK A: TRAVERSE
TASK B: VOLUME DETERMINATION
TASK C: SETTING OUT HORIZONTAL
TASK D: SETTING OUT VERTICAL and LEVELLING
Figure 1: Plan view showing proposed leisure complex building site.
Scope
This report examines all aspects carried out during the field exercise; this includes
an overview of the procedure while setting out, results tabulated and calculations for
the different tasks. Moreover, the report will mainly focus on a critical analysis
outlining on; problems within the team, precision achieved and acceptability,
technical problems experienced and how they were dealt with, weather conditions
and time constraint and there effects.
METHODOLOGY
Introduction
In this section the procedure of all the tasks completed will be elaborated as per
instructions by the lecturer and the information/ assessment book.
Task A: Traverse
The main aim of this exercise was to establish a control traverse around the site at
the top of west cliff.
The traverse had four stations with one student per station. Each student measured
three rounds of angles at one station; the precision of the measured angles had to
be better than +/-20. At each station observations had to be checked before
instrument is moved. Finally the traverse was computed including information on
partial coordinates, misclosures, linear errors and corrected (Bowditch) final
coordinates.
Task B: Volume determination
The main aim of this exercise was to determine the amount of soil needed to be
excavated at the area allocated as well as the volumes of soil involved in grading the
site
Firstly, a sketch of the area allocated was drawn by each student. The total station
was set up at a point with a clear visibility of the whole area. Spot height with 10m
grid were set up and marked with flags, irregular areas on the site were measured
using offsets. Heights and points of all grid lines and along the perimeter and break
lines were recorded on the total station and on a results table by each student.
The main aim of this exercise was to set out a beach house with bay window
(overlooking the sea).
All calculations of setting out had to be completed before start of the scheme, as the
exercise was time consuming. A parallel line at 3m offset to the promenade was built
and a point W1 where the total station was set up assuming coordinates value of
0.00E and 0.00N. A line parallel to the promenade was given a bearing of 270and
angles and distances which had already been calculated beforehand were used to
get the points of the beach house using the total station, peg positions by deflection
angles and distances along curve at 2m intervals were set. Baselines at ends and
diagonals were measured using total stations. Finally, all points were independently
checked and compared with the values already calculated.
Figure 2: Beach house setting out
The main aim of this exercise was to set out a new breakwater line along the beach.
First, a perpendicular line was set up from the promenade, and then ranging rods at
5m apart from the promenade were placed using Pythagoras theorem as illustrated
below

After setting out the three ranging rods as shown in figure three the other two rods
were set out at 5m apart from the third at a straight line with the rest. Then the height
from the benchmark to the point of start at the promenade was transferred taking
heights of ranging rods as intermediate sights. Assuming a gradient of 8 for the top
of the proposed breakwater, the heights at 5m intervals was calculated and indicated
using sliders at the ranging rods
Finally, the exercise ended by levelling between the OS benchmark by the caf to
the GPS control point on the top of the west cliff along the zigzag path.
