Magnetic Susceptibility Measurement Using Quincke's Tube: BITS Pilani

This document describes magnetic susceptibility measurement using Quincke's tube. It defines key terms like magnetic field, flux, induction, magnetization, and susceptibility. It explains different types of magnetic materials like diamagnetic, paramagnetic, ferromagnetic, and ferrimagnetic. It then discusses the lanthanides and actinides groups, and how magnetic fields are generated. The document also covers the origin of magnetism from orbital and spin moments. Finally, it describes how the Quincke's tube apparatus works to measure volume, mass, and molar magnetic susceptibilities.

Basic definitions

Magnetic field, H – Oe or A/m

Magnetic flux,  - Maxwell or Weber

Magnetic induction, B – G or T

Magnetization, M = moment/volume – emu /cm3 or A/m

Susceptibility,  = dM/dH – dimension less

Permeability,  = dB/dH – dimension less or H/m
