Inst Homework 03 - Holding and Required Equipment For IFR

This document provides instructions for an instrument flying homework assignment on holding procedures. It requires reading sections of the Instrument Flying Handbook and FAR regarding holding and recommends reading about holding procedures in the Jeppesen manual. It includes examples of different holding scenarios with diagrams and explanations of how to visualize the holding entries. It concludes with exercises to practice determining holding entries and a short quiz on holding concepts and required equipment for IFR flight.

Instrument Homework Assignment #3

Holding Example #1

There are many methods for determining the proper hold

entry. The one I like the best is called the visualization
method. For this example, imagine that you are on a heading
of 050° direct to a VOR from the southwest. You have been
told to hold West of the VOR on the 270 radial. Since ATC
didn’t specify which direction the turns would be, we’ll use
standard right turns. We begin by looking at our heading
indicator, HSI or RMI.

Next we “draw” an imaginary line that will represent our

inbound course. In this case, we’ll “draw” a line from 270° to
the center of the heading indicator.

Finally, we continue to “draw” our hold by imagining the

direction of the turns, in this case to the right. What we are
now visualizing is what we would see if we could look down
upon ourselves from above right as we were passing over the
NAVAID. Using this method, we can clearly see that a direct
entry to the hold would be the best possible entry.

Holding West on the 270° radial, right turns. Direct entry.

Holding Example #2

You are heading north direct to the VOR on the 180° radial
and you are issued the following holding instructions:

Hold Northeast on the 030° radial, left turns.

Next we “draw” an imaginary line that will represent our

inbound course.

In this case, we’ll “draw” a line from 030° to the center of the
heading indicator.

Finally, we continue to “draw” our hold by imagining the

direction of the turns, in this case to the left.

What we are now visualizing is what we would see if we could

look down upon ourselves from above right as we were
passing over the NAVAID.

Using this method, we can clearly see that a parallel entry to

the hold would be the best possible entry.

Holding Northeast on the 030° radial, left turns. Parallel Entry.

Holding Exercises

You are heading West direct to the VOR on the 090° radial.

Try to visualize these holds:

1. Northwest on the 330° radial.
2. West on the 270° radial, left turns.
3. Northeast on the 060° radial, left turns.
4. South on the 180° radial.

Next we “draw” an imaginary line that will represent our

inbound course.

Finally, continue to “draw” our hold by imagining the direction

of the turns.

Write the hold entries for the examples:

1. _______________________________________________________________________________

2. _______________________________________________________________________________

3. _______________________________________________________________________________

4. _______________________________________________________________________________

Try making up some random entries of your own.
