Course Name : Speaking Corner


Topic : Press Conference (Folklore)
Meeting/Time : 7th/ 75 minutes

Course Description
This course is designed to stimulate students to communicate in English which covers practicing
day-to-day conversation, practicing questioning and answering, and having light discussions on
various topics in English as an enhancement focusing on speaking that cannot be experienced
intensively during regular classes.

Basic Competence
Telling others about oneself, interviewing others about their life, and making a report

Goal
The students are able to clearly tell others about the characters they are enacting, interview others
any issues related to the characters other students are enacting, and make a report based on the
interview.

Instructional Objectives
1. Specifying personality traits of the selected folklore characters
2. Interviewing the folklore characters played by the other students
3. Answering the questions raised by the press

Indicators
At the end of the lesson, students are able to:

1. Briefly specify personality traits of the selected folklore characters


2. Interview the folklore characters played by the other students actively
3. Clearly answer the questions raised by the press

Learning Method
Method: Content-based learning

Technique: Role playing, interviewing, reporting, positive feedback, non-offensive manner of


correction, and lenience toward making mistakes

Note: the positive feedback and the non-offensive manner of correction will be given as stated in
the lesson plan of the first meeting.

Teaching and Learning Process


1. Pre-activities (5 minutes)
a. Students are shown some pictures of Malin Kundang and Roro Jonggrang.
b. Students are asked to guess who they are.
c. Students are asked to retell in brief the story of Malin Kundang and Roro Jonggrang.
2. Whilst activities (65 minutes)
a. Students are asked to draw a lottery containing the names of characters in the folklores
(Malin Kundang and Roro Jonggrang).
b. Students are asked to reveal the characters that they get from the lottery.
c. The teacher tells the students that they are going to have a press conference by enacting
the characters they get from the lottery and explains how to describe personalities and
characteristics.
d. Students are asked to specify the characteristics and the personalities of the characters
they are playing on a piece of paper. The teacher goes around checking for mistakes and
complimenting students for their efforts.
e. Students are asked to draw a lottery containing number 1 to 5. Students are forbidden to
open the folded lottery paper. They are asked to write down their names on the outer part
of the paper and collect it to the teacher.
f. The teacher calls the student who gets number one in the lottery and keep the order in
secret.
g. The teacher gives emphasis on the acceptance of making mistakes during speaking and
ask students not to worry about making mistakes in front of others.
h. The student who gets number one is asked to sit in front. Other students put their phones
on the table in front of the performing student as if they were reporters and recorded the
press conference.
i. The performing student is asked to introduce him/herself and his/her current state to the
press.
j. The other students acting as the press are asked to interview the performing students and
asked to take simple notes until five minutes are over. The activity goes on until all
students have performed.
k. The students are asked to give an opinion of which character they think is the most
interesting.
3. Post activities (15 minutes)
a. Students are asked to review what they have learned for this week.
b. Students are asked to review their strengths, their weaknesses, and their improvement
during this week.
c. The teacher wraps up the lesson.

Assessment
The assessment is done during the process. The rubric of the assessment is attached.
