Emissivity Measurement Apparatus PDF

This experiment aims to calculate the emissivity of a test plate by comparing its heat loss to a black plate of known emissivity. The apparatus consists of two identical plates, one coated black and one as a test plate, heated to equal temperatures inside an enclosure. Heat input and temperatures of both plates are measured over time. The emissivity of the test plate can be calculated using heat loss equations, accounting for conduction and convection losses being equal between plates, leaving radiation heat loss to determine emissivity based on the temperature difference between plates.

EXPERIMENT NO 6 EMISSIVITY MEASUREMENT APPARATUS

OBJECTIVE Study of radiation heat transfer by black plate and test plate
AIM To calculate the emissivity of test plate.
APPARATUS The experimental set up consists of two plates, the test plate comprises of a mica
DESCRIPTION heater. Black plate is identical with test plate, but its surface is blackened. As all
the physical properties, dimension and temperature are equal. Both plates are
supported on individual brackets in an enclosure with one side transparent to
ensure steady atmospheric conditions. Temperature sensors are provided to
measure the temperature of each plate and surrounding. Supply is given to heaters
through separate variacs and is measured with digital voltmeter and digital
ammeter.
EXPERIMENTAL 1. Ensure that mains ON/OFF switch given on the panel are at OFF position &
PROCEDURE dimmer stat is at zero position.
2. Connect electric supply to the set up.
3. Switch ON the mains ON/OFF switch.
4. Set the test plate heater input by the dimmer stat, voltmeter in the range 40-100
V.
5. Set the black plate heater input by the dimmer stat, voltmeter in the range 40-
100 V.
6. After 1.5 hrs. Note down the reading of voltmeter, ampere meter and
temperature sensors in the observation table after every 10 minutes interval till
observing change in consecutive readings of temperatures (±0.2 oC).

CLOSING PROCEDURE:
1. When experiment is over set the dimmer stat to zero position.
2. Switch OFF the mains ON/OFF switch.
3. Switch OFF electric supply to the set up.
DATA Diameter of test plate DS = 0.16 m
Diameter of black plate DB = 0.16m
Emissivity of black plate EB = 1
thickness of plates (l) = 0.009 m.

CALCULATION Heat input to black plate, Wb = VB x IB Watts

Heat input to test plate, WT = VS x IS Watts
Surface area of test plates, A = 2 ×[ (π/4) DB2 + (π DBl)]
For black plate,
Wb = WCVb + WCdb + WRb (i)

1
EXPERIMENT NO 6 EMISSIVITY MEASUREMENT APPARATUS

Where, WCvb = Convection losses

WCdb = Conduction losses
WRb = Radiation losses
Similarly, for test plate,
WT = WCvT + WCdT + WRT (ii)
As both plates are of same physical dimensions, same material and
at same temperatures,
WCvb = WCvT and WCdb = WCdT
Subtracting equation (ii) from (i) we get,
Wb ‒WT = WRb ‒WRT
= [σ A (Tb4 – TE4)]‒[σ A εT (Ts4 – TE4)]
As emissivity of black plate is 1,
Where, εT = Emissivity of test plate
σ = Stefan Boltzman constant = 5.667 × 10‒8 W/m2K4

CONCLUSION Emisvity of the test plate surface = ________at temperature of _____
