Monohull Vs Catamaran: Single Propeller Shaft Vs Double Propeller Shaft

This document compares monohulls and catamarans, discussing their characteristics. It notes that catamarans have less hull volume and drag than comparable monohulls. They also have greater stability due to their wider stance and larger surface area. However, monohulls are more maneuverable and responsive. The document also discusses propulsion and rudder options, stating that a single propeller shaft is not feasible for a catamaran but works for a monohull, and that dual rudders increase a vessel's maneuverability over a single rudder.

Monohull vs catamaran

catamarans were able to provide a wide beam as well as avoid excessive

drag
Monohull is more easier to capsize compare to catamaran
Catamarans typically have less hull volume, higher displacement, and
shallower draft (draught) than monohulls of comparable length. The two hulls
combined also often have a smaller hydrodynamic resistance than
comparable monohulls, requiring less propulsive power from either sails or
motors. The catamaran's wider stance on the water can reduce
both heeling and wave-induced motion, as compared with a monohull, and
can give reduced wakes.
Catamaran has a greater stability than monohull due to its large surface
area
Catamaran has a good turning stability than monohull
catamarans were able to provide a wide beam as well as avoid excessive
drag
A Monohull will tack quickly, is much more maneuverable and is faster to
respond to the helm than a catamaran.
Monohulls slice through the water effortlessly and without the slapping that
some catamarans (with low bridge decks) often produce.

Single propeller shaft vs double propeller shaft

A single shaft would only effectively work on a monohull as on a catamaran
is would have to be placed between the hulls to ensure it steers straight
which is not a feasible option for this project. Furthermore, a single shaft
propulsion system does not allow the vessel to turn on the spot or at slow
speed as there must be flow over the rudder.
-single shaft on monohull does not work as effective as double shaft on
catamaran due to catamaran has two engine(more powerful)
-with double propeller shaft will run better

No rudder vs Single rudder vs double rudder

-Without rudder,a control motor is needed to maneuver
Boat without rudder(maneuver using motor),faster respond

- The single rudder is easier to construct; however it also results in the vessel
being less manoeuvrable

-The dual rudder doubles the force generated when the rudders are turned
increasing the manoeuvrability
