Tone Color Music Curriculum
Kindergarten ● Experience various instrumental sounds
● Recognize instruments as high-pitched or low-pitched ● Identify non-pitched percussion instruments ● Demonstrate loud and soft ● Distinguish between speaking, singing, whispering, and shouting
1st Grade ● Identify and classify instruments as woods, metals, scrapers,
shakers, and membranes (drums)
2nd Grade ● Identify the difference between non-pitched and pitched
classroom percussion instruments (xylophones, metallophones, glockenspiels) ● Distinguish between solo singing voice and multiple singing voices ● Perform and discriminate between forte and piano
3rd Grade ● Classify standard string and percussion instruments
● Perform and discriminate between unison and harmony ● Perform and discriminate between crescendo and decrescendo
4th Grade ● Classify standard woodwind and brass instruments
● Perform and discriminate between pianissimo and fortissimo
5th Grade ● Distinguish between band and orchestra
● Perform and discriminate between mezzo forte and mezzo piano
