Architectural Research Methods of

This document discusses different types of research design. It outlines three main types: pure or basic research, which seeks to understand fundamental principles without necessarily solving practical problems; applied research, which uses existing theories to solve specific problems through methods like case studies and action research; and developmental research, which systematically develops and evaluates instructional programs and products. The importance of research methodology is that it determines the appropriate method for the problem being studied and the accuracy and efficiency of the results.

Topic 3.

Types of Research Design

Overview
This topic introduces the different types of research and the processes by which data is
gathered and interpreted.
Objective
At the end of the lesson the students should:
1. Know the types of research methodology and their application.
2. Understand the importance of the research methodology.
Discussion:
1. Importance of Research Methodology in a Research Study
A. Determines the suitable method for the chosen problem
B. Determines the accuracy of the results of the method used
C. Determines the efficiency of the method
D. explains the following:
 Why is the particular research study undertaken?
 How did one formulate the research problem?
 What type of data were collected?
 What types of data were collected?
 What particular method has been used?
 Why was a particular technique of analysis of data used?
2. Main Classification of Research
A. Pure, basic or fundamental research is
 conducted primarily to test or arrive at theory
 an investigation on basic principles and reasons for occurrence of a particular
event or process or phenomenon
 also called a theoretical research
 may or may not lead to immediate use or application
 it is not concerned with solving any practical problems of immediate interest
 it provides a systematic and deep insight into a problem and facilitates
extraction of scientific and logical explanation and conclusions on it.
 the outcomes can be used for applied research
 improves a theory or method
B. Applied research
 applies theory to solutions of problems
 solves certain problems employing well known and accepted theories and
researches.
 examples:

 action research –involves discovering a problem in the local setting and
solving it within the same setting without intention of generalizing its
results.
 case studies - an empirical inquiry that investigates a contemporary
phenomenon within its real-life context; when the boundaries between
phenomenon and context are not clearly evident; and in which multiple
sources of evidence are used
 the outcome has immediate application
 A comparison of Basic Research and Applied Research
BASIC RESEARCH APPLIED RESEARCH

 seeks generalization  studies individual or

 aims at basic processes specific cases without
 attempts to explain the objective to
why things happen generalize
 tries to get all the facts  aims at any variable
 reports in the technical which makes the
language of the topic desired difference
 tries to say how things
can be changed
 tries to correct the facts
which are problematic
 reports in common
language

C. Developmental research
 The systematic study of designing, developing and evaluating instructional
programs, processes and products that must meet criteria of internal
consistency and effectiveness,
 Important in the field of instructional technology
 Common types:
 product development process
 impact of the product on the users
 general analysis or evaluation of the product in components or as a
whole.
 There should be a distinction between the reports of actual development
research (practice) and the description and development of procedural model
(theory)
