Review Unit 7 - U-Substitution and Integration

On the test, you will be required to show all of your work. The test will be divided into calculator and no calculator parts. This review is not
comprehensive. Please look back over your notes, your homework, and your quizzes to help you study for the test. This review will count as
part of your test grade!
Topics to study:
 U-Substitution Indefinite Integrals
 U-Substitution Definite Integrals
 U-Substitution Integrals: Logarithmic Functions
 U-Substitution Exponential functions

22. Calculator allowed. At time t minutes, the temperature of a cup of coffee is 180 degrees Fahrenheit. Left in a
room whose temperature is 70 °F, the coffee cools and selected values of the temperature are given in the table.
time t (minutes) 0 0.5 1 2 2.5 3
Temperature C(t) (°F) 180 155.7 136.4 110.2 101.5 94.6
For 3  t  8 , a student determines rate of the temperature change is given by C ' (t )  55e0.5t dt , given in
degrees Fahrenheit per minute. Find the temperature after 8 minutes.
23. Calculator allowed. The rate, in calories per minute, at which
a person using an exercise machine burns calories is modeled by
the function f . In the figure, f can be approximated by
f ( x)  4 sin( x  1.9)  5 for 0  t  4 and is piecewise linear
for 4  t  24
(A) Find the average calories per minute burned for 0  t  4 .

(C) Find the average calories per minute burned for 4  t  16 .

24. A particle moves along the x-axis with velocity at time t  0 given by v(t )  3  e5t
(a) Find the acceleration of the particle at time t = 2.

(b) Is the speed of the particle increasing at time t = 2? Give a reason for your answer.

(c) Given that p (t ) is the position of the particle at time t and p (0)  2 , find p (3) .

25. Calculator allowed. A crystal being grown in a lab has its mass recorded daily over a period of 10 days. The table
above gives a sample of the mass of the crystal at selected days during its growth, where t represents the amount of time
the crystal has been growing in days, and M (t ) is a twice-differentiable function representing the mass of the crystal in
grams at time t . (Calculator allowed)
(A) Estimate M ' (9) . Show the work that leads to your answer. Indicate units of measure.

(B) A student proposes the equation E (t )  3.98131(1.3231)t as a model for the mass over the crystal in
grams over time t, in days. Find E ' (9) . Using appropriate units explain the meaning of your answer.

(C) Using the student’s equation from part b, E (t )  3.98131(1.3231)t , find the average mass of the crystal over the
10-day period.
